Have you ever felt discriminated?

discrimination - discrimination is a crime

There are instances when we are discriminated by other people. Discrimination comes in different forms. Racial, gender, age, religion, and a whole lot more! Sometimes, we are not even aware that what just happened to us is a form of discrimination. In my case, I have felt discriminated several times already. Sometimes, just like other people, I shrug it off. At times, I rant about it too. How about you? Have you ever been discriminated or at least felt that you were discriminated? What did you do?

I remember being discrimated against when I was looking for an apartment once. The landlord was very friendly until he noticed my son in the car, who is of mixed ethnicity. All of a sudden he had no applications available, although I saw the applications sitting behind him on the counter. I reported it to Fair Housing, but somehow he was able to cover his rear end and they told me I didn't have case. Go figure.

Well, I'm really sorry to hear that. It's pretty obvious what's going on. Anyway, I remember one time, I was driving to my friend's house and I saw this big apartment. On the gate was, "Units Available for Rent (Koreans Only)". At first I thought there was nothing really wrong with it but still I asked my friend who lived near that apartment. I asked her if the apartment was owned by Koreans (which probably explains why they prefer Korean tenants). She told me that the apartment is owned by a Filipino couple and that they used to have Filipino boarders too. So I thought that maybe, the owner know how much they could earn from the Koreans considering that their population in our city is really growing fast and at the same time, are willing to pay more for good apartments like these.

I've been discriminated against when looking for a house to rent at a few of the real estate agencies. I was discriminated by age though, not by ethnicity or anything like that. Of course, it's illegal for them to do that, but they have ways of getting around it, like saying "oh that property has already gone" or some other load of crap that certainly isn't true. It's pretty unfair how other younger people have ruined it for everyone else.

@Yoshi... That was unfair indeed. Well, I hope you were able to look for one.

Yup. I was discrimnated against by the US Army. I was 17 years old and although I was not seriously considering the miltary they discrimnated against me because of my body mass. I had attended a school seminar on careers in the miltary and the recruiter called me at home to talke about me joining up. He only asked me two questions; How tall are you? I answered 5'11" and How must do you weigh? 270lbs. He then thanked me and hung up. That kind of burned me on the military ever since. Yeah, I'm a big guy, but you don't have to be rude about it.

I have been discriminated for my size too. It's sad but hey! That doesn't make us less of a person right? You are correct, they don't have to be rude about it. One time when I was in college, I went to the athletics office to sign-up for tennis trials. The coach of the tennis team immediately turned me down without me actually trying out. He looked at me for a while (from head to toe) and said, "You? Are you sure? Maybe you just have to try next schoolyear." Well, I never did anyway. What's surprising is that he sees me play at the tennis club. I am not a novice in this area! So I guess it was not how I play the game, it was ME. Sad...

I have been discriminated against many times but the time that I remember the most was when I went to work for the city that I worked for , (for over 30 years). When I first went to work there the men that I worked with had friends that were waiting for the job that i got (I was not even born in the state and I am of Native American heritage. It took almost 10 years to feel that I belonged working for the city. I could not not allow the people there to run me out of that job and I did not allow them to get to me.

I felt bad once while hunting jobs after graduating from college. I came from a reputable catholic school, I'm proud of my alma mater, on my opinion it is one of the best but since it is not located in the capital city of the country, it is less known also because our basketball team is not a member of UAAP (its a basketball league televise in national TV). When I started reading adds in the newspaper, some companies prefer a particular university and discourage applicantes so submit CVs if not a graduate of the said school (actually the term they use "graduate not from these schools need not apply" or something like "graduates from blah blah univiersities will be given priority"). How sad it that. I mean, after reading the job qualifications (knowing that I'm viable for the job) I'm still not qualified just because I did not graduate from the school they prefer (sigh).

i seen this happen to my philippine wife at a local philippine festival. my wife told me to buy some chicken and rice and i asked why she don't do it? she told me because they just ignored her when she went to the counter..i went to the counter and was waited on right off by a pinoy and she when i spoke a little tagalog shew was very friendly..this was a charity functin and the volunteers were nurses (miss america was there too as she was from our hometown and also a nurse"_) but i will never forget this..this happened in 1988 but now my wife has been here for over 22 years and is more assertive and will not tolerate this here in the US or the Philippines as it happens everywhere it seems

I have heard similar stories from my relatives and friends who are based abroad. Sad as it is, they have to live by it. Some of them are used to it. Others have of course surpassed these kinds of test. It's a matter of being tough I guess...

I feel like that often now. I'm trying to get a part time job or ones through a temp service and everywhere I go the people are younger than me. I'm 53, not that old but I don't dye my hair so I look my age. I don't get jobs. I'm also overweight, not obese but I could happily lose 25 pounds. I don't know if it's discrimination but when I do business with the places where the temp services have sent me to interview, the ones they hired are all in their 20's.

Oh I just felt so discriminated just recently. There is this spa and health center in Cebu wherein i am a lifetime member. About a few weeks ago, i decided to avail of their treatment package and i had the whole thing set on an appointment for saturday afternoon. Since its saturday and all i had to do just lie there and be pampered, i didn't bother to dress up but went there wearing my old but still good clothing. When i asked the receptionist for my appointment, she all but ignored me and seems not to hear or notice that i am talking to her. She didn't even bother checking the appointment books or any record and just told me that no doctor is available when i had arranged for a doctor to see me first before i go to any treatments. She didnt bother to check anything and what irked me was that she gave me a once over. Grrr! then she told me that she would reschedule me for monday without even asking if its okey with. So i told her nevermind and i left and went to another spa. The frontliner discriminated me because of how i dressed that day. Now somebody from their spa keeps on calling me inviting me to try out their treatments for free if i would just enrol for their package treatments. I told them that it would no longer happen because i am already happy with my current treatments and i don't like the way they handle clients anyway.

Hi dolce_vita78! Oh, I have experienced several discriminations before and just like you, I shrugged it off and other times, when I can't really take it, I do rant about it and there is this one time, that I did cry. It hurts and it makes you mad but at the end of the day, I try to reflect on the situation and just pray about it. Because I could not really changed other people's attitude, i just can change myself and so I pray for a stronger and better me. Take care and have a nice day! :)

yes, I think we all have at one point or another. for me it has been my quietness, my blondness, when I was younger and looked very much younger than i was, i often got treated as a child by people younger than me. Sadly, there are too many that are quick to judge a person without really knowing anything about them.

Yeah sometimes. Well I always show to those people that what they are thinking is wrong. We should never show defeat to the people who discriminate us. Thanks!

i believe nobody is excempted from discrimination or prejudice. it's just a part of life. people see other people and they see something what the other person's weaknesses are. and they begin to criticize til one thing leads to another. it's really up to the person whether he/she would let that get into his/her nerves. sometimes it's best to just let it pass -- but there are times, when it deeply wounds -- then we have to stand up for ourselves.
