Has anyone ever applied for a small business grant?

I have tons of information on these grants but I have never written a grant. Or a business plan for that matter. I don't know what to do or if it is even worth my time. Has anyone out there ever applied for a grant? Did you receive it? What did you have to do? And if you have not applied, why not? Do you think you are eligible?

I have not yet applied for any grants, but it's something I might do in the future. We started up our business in the fall of 2006 with our own, very limited funds. it has been slow going but so far we have seen a small amount of profit and I am really proud of what we have been able to create. I'm not sure if I would be eligible for any grants since our business is already established, and I am not sure where to start looking for grants to apply for. I do have a business plan, and I think they are great to have even if your business is already established. It's a good summary of what your business is about for any potential investors, and my business plan has really helped us keep on track with the vision we had when we first started the business. If you know of grants that you are eligible for then I definitely think it would be worth the time and effort to apply. After all, what do you really have to lose? It may take a bit of time but in the end if you get a grant, that could mean big things for your business.

When I was writing my business plan, I did a lot of research online. We spent a lot of time researching our market, and seeing what people were already spending their money on and how much they were spending. We looked at the pricing of our competition. We thought about the sorts of things that we would do to set ourselves apart from our competitors. We wrote a mission statement for our company, which has helped to provide guidance as we continue to grow. Those are definitely some good places to get started.
