My son bought me a new camera for Christmas, it's a Nikon 8.1 megapixel (coolpix). For starters, I don't know much about cameras, but is there anything I can do to get some cool pictures with this camera? Like putting something over the lens, to distort the photos, colored plastic, etc.. Or do I have to have a really nice, expensive camera with a huge lens on it or something? :o) Thanks if you can help me figure something out......

Oh, what kind of CoolPix? I love the CoolPix line and I am now on my third one (not that they break, they're just all different... the first one was 2 megapixels and one of the first digital cameras and it is still a great camera, another is the 8700 8 megapixel which is almost like an SLR with all of its functions, and then my newest one is the S5 which is tiny and portable and I also have underwater housing for it). On my 8700, you could put filters on the lens with an adapter. On my S5, no, it would be impossible because there are no threads to screw anything onto the camera lens. If you let us know exactly which model, maybe someone here will have one and know the limitations and also what you can do with it.

Ah ok, the S51 is similar to the S5 that I have... except that yours is a newer model than mine, has more megapixels, and some extra features. You won't be able to put filters on the lens manually with that camera. However, a lot of the filter effects that you might be hoping to do can be done with PhotoShop and other photo editing programs.

If it has a macro function you can get some really neat closeups of flowers, icicles and other things like that. It's amazing what technology we have today!

All of the CoolPix cameras have great macro in my experience. It's the little flower button that is shaped like a tulip. Even my first digital camera, the Nikon CoolPix 800, had great macro. I still use it if I'm shooting photos where it's okay that they are small. I don't always need 6 or 8 megapixels. Most of the time, I don't. :)

aside from taking macro pictures, your camera can be very useful for landscape or street photography. The best that you can do maybe is to think of something that you really like to capture that is worth keeping. it might be a sunrise, sunset, insects, flowers, etc. other photographers like their photos as it is..no manipulations, tricks, etc. As long as you have good composition, balance, etc. keep on shooting!
