Bad Grammar on myLot

I have noticed that many people on myLot use poor grammar! I'm not saying that mine is perfect, but it is readable. I am new to myLot so I was just wondering if I happened to come across some bad posts, or if this is what I should expect from the writers here. Is anyone else bothered by this? Also, do those who post with bad grammar receive as much money as those with good grammar?

I think grammar is something that we all must just accept here as there are so many people from different countries coming in here, I know a lot are trying to learn English and I think they are doing a good job so I think we can put up with a few grammar errors.

Well said, lilaclady. If you spend any amount of time on internet message boards or discussions, there is horrible grammar and spelling and punctuation. That doesn't sit well with someone like me, being one of my pet peeves, but after a while you just have to let go. The internet is not a good place to be a 'grammar nazi' or to get all worked up over that sort of thing! It's also frustrating to me having been a teacher and seeing such terrible decline in the quality of our U.S. schools. But you are right, especially a place like this as an international website appealing to other countries besides the U.S., and more than anything else I love communicating with people from other countries and hearing about their cultures and perspectives. I have no problems with any spelling or grammar errors while getting to meet so many great people from all around the world!!

My egotistical self just assumed this was a US site sense it was in English! haha but I have been on the site for a couple weeks now and i like. so nevermind about that post!

I see it as well. Some people are from other nations and mastering the English language is not easy for them. We need to be tolerant and accept others. It would be the same with you if you were trying to master their tongue.

This is a great point you made that I forgot to mention in my response. We must take a comment at its face value whether or not it's in broken English. I think it's amazing for those from other countries where English isn't their first language to become members of myLot and to learn the language through being a part of this site. I really admire people who can do this! I completely agree with you. Great response.

You better watch what you type before you post because you might fall victim yourself, it happens to me when a topic excite me.

Bad grammar doesn't bother me in the least, as I am not sure I have good grammar myself. However lazy writing does bother me. It is clear to me that some people just simply want to type anything to get their pennies; so bad grammar is an understatement sometimes and I do think it is possible for that type of discussion to earn less! Grant it I have no way of knowing this for sure! Come, stay and enjoy your time here at myLot. Let your writing skills shine to gain your viewers. MyLot is a good starting point for a wannabe writer; see where it can take you if this is your desire!

Yes. I have noticed some mylotters with bad grammer. I am not a whiz in grammer. I just write how I talk. But I do know many foreigners that have learned and know better grammer than myself. I am an easygoing carefree gal. How someone writes does not bother me one bit.

It did bother me when I started, but for many of the reasons already given, I have stopped letting it worry me. Focus your attention on the issue being discussed, and the ideas that the person is putting forward. I will admit, though, that the use of text language does annoy me. I tend not to use abbreviations when I text, either. I find the message can be lost when I don't understand the abbreviation! I figure I always have the choice of not reading or responding to a post that I can't decipher.

Bear in mind that a huge number of members are from all sorts of countries in the world. English may not be their native language. Some of them are trying so hard to get their point across and give it their best effort. I agree with you though, a lot of us could improve our grammar. As far as payment on Mylot is concerned, it depends on the quality of your response and how long it is. Oneliners in flawless English will not earn any money.

I have noticed it to, but some of the bad grammar, probably is from people typing too fast, or from other countries. As for myself, I've been out of school for so long, that I just forgot how some things are spelled, and where I'm suppose to punctuate. That's what I think anyway..... Marilyn :o)

I think there are two main reasons for poor grammar on Mylot. 1. English is not the users first language 2. Users post to discussions quickly and their fingers do not go as fast as their brain. Of course, it could just be poor education or they just don't care.

I've also noticed this aswell, my grammar is not the best but i try! Also i agree that because there are a lot of foreign members some of them may have bad grammar because they write in english only as a second language, however i fully support them, i believe if someone has made a post with good content it should still be credited regardless of the grammar not being the best. What i don't like is when native english speakers write "all like dis liek lol u kno wat i mean dis is not a sms text msg or a chatroom" or non-native speakers that make no effort to improve their english skills.

I think that a lot of the poor grammar seen on this site has a lot to do with people writing as they would speak. I also wonder if some of the people who don't speak or write english as their primary language, are perhaps using some of those translation programs, like "babelfish"? I have more of an issue with certain spelling mistakes. That is more of a pet peeve to me than the grammar issues. One of my biggest issues is with the improper use of "then" instead of "than".....ooohhhhh... that one makes my skin crawl!

I've noticed the same. Although it's not completely common, I see enough bad grammar here on myLot to become frustrating. I try not to get too upset over it, though, because I understand people make mistakes in their typing. I'm sure I'll have one or two in this response. The funny thing is, I had grueling proofreading classes in college, so making a typo or spelling error was like the unpardonable sin. (LOL) So this discussion hits closer to home for me than a lot of people. I also have to be really careful at work because I'm an accounting analyst. Therefore, the numbers really matter to me. If one number is off, I'm in serious trouble! I can definitely relate to the issue you addressed in this discussion, though. I see it more often than not. I don't know what would help cure the problem. Perhaps an auto proofreading feature on myLot? That might be more trouble than it's worth. It would probably be really expensive and hard to implement also. I know people don't always feel like or have time to proofread what they type, so I guess it's just inevitable. This is a great topic, though. Thanks for your post.

I don't ever really pay attention to all of that stuff, I don't think that they get more money for having better grammar...I will be the first to admit that i don't have the best grammar at all because I know that i am on here helping people out with their problems or questions and I don't figure they care if i have perfect grammar...or at least i hope they don't care..i haven't heard anything from anyone yet if they do..I don't think people really take the time to pay much attention to the grammar...they are usually just wanting help or trying to help other people with their problems!

I have to say that often bad grammar does bother me if I meet someone I know or hear someone speaking at an event or in church and they use incorrect grammar. On MyLot and other online discussion boards, however, I think we need to realize that many people using these services do not have English as their mother tongue and are doing the best they can. It therefore does not bother me as much online as it would offline.

I dont mind the grammar.obviously there are some really bad examples of it here but i try to read on.I hate having to do my capitals as i am a fast one finger typer and it does not come naturally to me.However i am trying to be a bit better as grammar is important and i was top of my class in english so why slip into bad habits.I don't know whether they recieve the same money as the money is not very good here anyway. They could not get much less.

You are right; many myloters are not speaking correct English. But we should see that this is a world wide forum and here are many people, who have no English as their first language. It is enough that we are becoming aware of different cultures all over the world. We can get flavor of different languages here. We can get an opportunity to understand others. To talk with the people from different countries. I think grammar is a secondary issue. We should follow the information

Hah! I am a grammarian and even I occasionally submit a comment with bad grammar, but that is because I've somehow acquire quite a few myLot friends and I don't like to neglect any of them, so in order to spend a little time with each, I just type faster than a speeding bullet and don't always go back to make corrections. Some of the typos are a bit funny, but so far nothing toooooo embarrassing has come out. Unless the mistakes are truly extreme it is doubtful to me that there would be much of an earnings difference as the thought is probably what counts. After all, this is a social networking community more than a literary society. Welcome to myLot! With all its warts it really is a great community.
