A colleague of mine has suggested taht I should do this exercise. it can help me get more oxygen to my lungs and I can lose fat also. Frankly spaeking i get a little breathless if I go up the staircase 1-2 floors also. from yesterday I have started this. yesterday i went down 7 floors and came up 6 floors. I was experiencing pain at my calf muscles and also breathless ness. I think it will be ok after few days. Today i did up and down 8 floors each way. Can I lose fat in stomach and thigh areas this way? do you do this? how Can I get benefits from it?

superb aerobic exercise! good for you, it sounds like you are really motivated. that is a lot of flights of stairs to do when you are just starting out - make sure to not over do it and injure yourself. you will lose fat all over, and build muscle in your thighs, calves, and arms if you move them while doing it - you will also strengthen your ankles and neck muscles and very importantly your heart muscle! stair climbing is a really good multi function workout.

I think any exercise you get you will benefit from. Increase your lungs expansion and tighten up your muscles plus burn calories. I try to power walk a little every morning at work...just to get limbered up and get rid of a few extra calories.

When you first start, you should not try so hard, otherwise you will get hurt at calf muscles. you can increase the steps or floor after 1 week. And sure that is good and it will help your stummy a lot.

i've heard people saying that walking up and down the stair is a good form of exercise as well as losing weight too. maybe if you do it often then you wouldn't feel anymore pain or something hehe. but take it slow, don't run, walk slowly. take care!

Hello subha12,Speed walking at morning and evening untill you get totally drenched in perspiration is the best way to reduce your fat safely, and no dont continue your staircase exercise ,it might produce bad effects to your heart, your knee joints, spinalcord etc in future, also get your heart and lungs checked up by a doctor,I mean just a routine checkup and continue you high speed walking excercise only on plane lands. Thanks

Sure it is a good exercise. In any exercise we should not try to do more than what we can do in the beginning stage itself. It will do bad rather than any good. Since you are doing it for the first time you may feel some pain to joints in the morning. But never mind it will go away in two three days. Another thing that I have heard is to drink water soon after you wakeup in empty stomach. It will reduce your tummy, but I am not sure if it is effective or not. One of my uncle tried this and he lost weight. So you may try it. Anyway drinking water is always good for health ;).

I do that kind of stuff all the time. I'll walk instead of drive. or take the stairs instead of the elevator. I think it makes the mind and body stronger.

you will certainly tone up your legs and burn more calories than walking on flat ground.its very hard to lose fat from stomach area.it seems to be the last to shift if you are on a diet.keep it up anyway. it will keep you healthy and you will notice a difference in a month or so.

I know older man who thinks that staircase at his apartment building is reason of his good health. So he walks up and down the 7th floor every day. I believe that is is good extracise, but bad if we have to take something very heavy up.

Hey, u need to be very carefull when doing any kind of excercise. You need to gradually increase. Not all of a sudden. Instead of using the elevator/lift, u can always use the staircase. But remember to start initially with 2-3floors. Slowly increase them. If u think that u can do better, then go for 4 floors. Do not start with 7-8 floors on the initial day. Let me give u few simple, useful tips. -Skip for 5mins (around 100counts) daily.(Using skipping ropes) -Use the staircase whenever possible -Prefer walking to the nearby shops whenever possible. -Yoga can also, prove to be very helpful to u. These will surely help u.

Yes, you can lose fat in the stomach and thighs...You actually use your stomach muscles walking up steps..Doing steps is better than just walking...Anything that raises your heart rate is good for you...I use to while I was on break at work...I lost alot of weight..But I no longer work there so I have put some weight back on...I have became lazy in my old age....LOL

Subha, this is a very good exercise. In fact the only exercise I do most of the days is just stairing! I work in a hospital and whenever I am required to go up or come down I use the stairs. Initially it was bit hard since the building has an old structured stairs. However, now its kind of a feel good factor for me. So, great going, keep it up.

I knew it was a good exercise but didn't know exactly how good it would be so I waited to see what the other responses would be and it seems to be a good one so in that case, I just may join you in doing it! I need to lose a few pounds too.... sheesh, who doesn't anymore? lol

Well, walking is a great exercise and mix that with inclination i.e. the stairs, you multiply calorie burn by 6! However, since gravity is one of the main reason for this, going down the stairs does not offer much. So I suggest that you go up the stair and then take the elevator down. You'll save more time and energy so that you can take more flight up the stairs. And you can use that time also to catch your breath and relax a bit. Your metabolism will stay the sae as when you were on your way up because it does not go down as fast.. Hope this helped. If you need clarification, just reply back.. I used to climb stairs in our university sports complex and had researched a little about this.. lol.. By the way, about the fat burning, you burn fat where you stored it, so if you stored fat in your stomach and bums, then you'll burn them through cardio..
