Do Friends Really Age?

Just today I was thinking about all the friends I had when I was younger. You know the ones I'm talking about, the type where you are inseperable. The ones where you freaked out with when if you decide on differnt schools, the ones you do everything with. So, why is it that, for one reason or another, I look back and see that most of these friends I don't even talk to anymore? Sometimes things in life get in the way of keeping in touch. But I've found that as I've aged, some of my friends can't stand me anymore, and sometimes this is both ways. After realizing this silly fact, I wonder if that is what it is, silly. It seems impossible to me that such inseperable friends now don't even talk with eachother. So, what does everyone think about this? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one out there that this has happened to, and I want to know if other people just let things go how they go, or try to keep in touch with everyone.
