How real is reality programming?

When you watch shows like Big Brother or Survivor, do you believe all of what is going on? I hardly believe that when contestants are "whispering" to each other in "seclusion" that they really believe no one can see or hear them. I mean, how stupid are they? The way they dress and look out on the "islands" and believing that they actually eat those gross things is just beyond my beliefs. Some of it may indeed be true but I am positive that many parts of these programs are fixed and arranged and produced specifically for a certain look and outcome. I don't believe that television reality is that real. I even think that some of these dramatic stories on talk shows like Maury and maybe even Dr. Phil are just made up for the interest and the ratings. I believe some people probably make up their dramas and woes just to get on tv and get paid. Who agrees with me?

I avoid worrying about it, and simply refuse to watch those shows at all. :) Most of the people on those reality shows are attention seekers. I don't doubt that a lot of the stuff they do is put on purposely, just to get a rise. They have scouts out interviewing tons of people for each of these shows to make sure the people on them are ratings grabbers. And it seems they're doing a fine job, even if some of their picks are over the top.

You have hit the nail right on the head with "attention grabbers...over the top." I think that says it all! Oh, well, it can be good for a laugh if you can see it this way. What I really don't like is all the disgusting things they show like making them eat stuff that no one would ever dream of..., but sometimes I think they just have to substituting chocolate syrup on spaghetti or other base and some other gooey stuff for all the bloody, gutsy looking stuff.

I don't watch them, so I don't know about the gory food items... but you never know... it could be real or fake. Some people will do (or eat) anything for attention. Thank you for the best response. :)

No I do not believe in any of the REality Show. I don't believe in Pinoy Big Brother here in the Phils. I don't know they keep on fooling their televiewers that is what happening there are true. Of course not i will never be true. And also the votes are manipulated.Peace to the fans of PBB. Sorry for what i said, but that is what i believe in.

It's ok, I don't think you need to apologize for what you believe. I am sure you are not alone. I certainly tend to agree with you.

I don't watch many of these type shows but I can tell you that the Dr. Phil show is for real. When my daughter stole all my money and had 2 of my dogs put to sleep while in was in the hospital I really didn't want to prosecute so I contacted Dr. Phil and I can assure you that within in a few hours after emailing his web site I was contacted by one of the producers and over the next 10 days was thoroughly investigated to make sure that what I had told the producers was the truth and not just some story to get on TV. My daughter and I would have appeared but my son-in-law had a fit at the idea of his wife being exposed on national television

Of course your son-in-law had to keep you off the tv because that would have meant that you would collect some sort of cash or other compensation, including all the nice things Dr. Phil apparently does for his guests. I am sure from what you have said that your daughter and her husband would not want you to benefit from anything like that. I hope you did end up getting some kind of justice, regardless of whether or not you got on TV.
