I am thinking of doing the hooked on phonics program with my son this summer or fall. He is 4 and can go to school. I don't know if its like this in the states but if your 4 and your birthday is before december 31 you go to school in the fall. My husband and I don't feel he is socially ready but he does know all his letters and is learning the sounds now. He can write some of them but not very well yet. So I thought instead I will do the hooked on phonics with him this summer or fall and put him in kindergarten the next year, he will be 5 years and 9 months then in the fall of next year. My daughter is in kindergarten now and is learning to read and they don't teach the long and short sounds which I think is just retarded. They do that next year, so I thought if I do the phonics with my son, Joshua then he'll be ahead in that area once he goes to kindergarten. I think I'm also going to do it with my 5 year old daughter. So has anyone out there done the Hooked on phonics with their kids? Is it good? Did it work? Thanks for any input.

Go for it. I have not used Hooked on Phonics but I have used Tampa Reading Key and I found it amazingly effective with my primary students. I was teaching ESL in Bangkok and my pupils came from Korea, Thailand, and other Asian countries which means they all came from a non-English speaking country and I can't expect their parents to teach English phonics. But this Tampa reading key helped me a lot. I know you will do an excellent job to teach your kids phonics and it's very helpful for the kids too as they will be more confident when they get to school.
