I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. In Bensonhurst in fact, Bay 25th to be exact. My family moved to Lexington, Kentucky when I was 20 yrs old. There are some things that I really miss about New York and some things that I do not. Here is my list: Things That I Miss: 1)The way everything stays open practically all night 2)The FOOD!!! 3)The diffrent ethnic backgrounds you come across 4)The bakeries 5)That there is always something to do and always something going on 6)MANHATTEN!!! I miss this more than anything else... 7)Italian ice, these you can find mainly in pizzerias. Mmmm...My favorite was Pastacio (did I spell that right LOL) 8)The New York skyline at night, lit up in all it's glory. Although, it will never be the same without the Twin Towers among them... Things I do not miss: 1)The thugs and punks that hang out on street corners and think they are so bad a&%, when they really aren't 2)The rats LOL... 3)The roaches 4)The dirty sidewalks, streets, and graffiti on the walls 5)The lack of beautiful greenary LOL... 6)People not waving and being rude to you in restaurants, grocery stores and stores in general 7)The crazy driving habits of New York drivers What about you all, those who have lived there, what do you miss or don't miss about it?

I've never even been to New York and I miss the food! My husband lived and worked there for a time before we were together, and there are so many times when we find something nice in a new restaurant or deli and he exclaims something like "This is almost as good as what we ate in New York, but there you can find it on every street corner"--lol. Why is it that the greatest places to find abundant food are also quite often the places where you don't even feel like eating because the people are so rude, though? LOL. We travel back and forth between our little village in the desert and the San Francisco Bay Area, and it is culture shock every time. As you say, some of the things are plus things that we miss as soon as we are 100 miles out of the city and others are minus things that we flee. The same is true of leaving the boondocks and going back "home." When we leave our country place I miss that checkers in the supermarket lines look you in the face and say "Hello, it has been almost a week since we saw you. How is everything?" and we have a polite chat before they start counting up the money, whereas when we get back if we make the mistake of smiling at the cashier and saying even just one word of hello we are likely to be looked upon and down contemptuously and grunted at. Also, when we get back to the city we miss the stars in the night sky. They are up there somewhere but not visible.

You made some excellent points and I definitely agree with you. I hate that when I go back home to NY and I go into a store they don't even bother looking at you or being curteous. Here in Kentucky a lot of times they will smile and ask how you're doing and everything. I think that's always nice. I definitely miss being able to see the stars as well, when I go to NY. I love looking at the stars...

I miss public transportation. NY just got it going on. Everybody hates you when you're a New Yorker but everybody want to go to New York.

This is killing me! I live in Australia. I've never been to New York but I really really really want to live there for 6 months or a year. I want to walk up and down a side walk and I want to live in an apartment that has the stairs going all the way down to the side walk. I want to go out late at night and eat great food and visit all the little stores. I am so jealous of you people who live/lived there! I will make it there one day.

I mostly miss the food. Just ordered some Drakes Cakes online to satisfy a craving. Almost anything you'd want is available in New York. I live in SC and there isn't any pizza down here in the best places that can compete with the worst I had in NY. Bagels are better now because national bakers are making them NY style. We still have no Knishes or decent Italian food overall. The best Italian food is Olive Garden and I don't remember them in NY.
