Ode to aprons... lol. I really like aprons! they are so useful. not only to protect your clothing from household chores (both teh dirt and the cleansers) or out door work (gardening, mechanics, pruning, harvesting etc) or cooking splatters.... but they have for time immemorial been the mother's helping hand. to wipe the tears of a child... to gather up a pile of toys to take to the play room... to carry the freshly laid eggs out of the barn... or perhaps a freshly hatched chick! to wipe the perspiration off of your forehead... to dab the blood from a skunned up knee.... to polish up an apple from the orchard..... to carry in a pile of kindling from the woodpile.... not to mention the apron is an excellent place for a shy or frightened child to hide behind...and it is said that the strings are cut when the child grows up....(as he was previously tied to them) the apron is such a versatile piece of clothing, but I wonder if most youngons today even know what an apron is... is it a piece of yesteryear? or is it still an honored part of the modern day woman's (and mans) wardrobe?

Wow! That is something! I have never looked at an apron like that. I love aprons because I look like an expert homemaker when I wear one, lol. But really, I like wearing aprons when I'm doing chores. I like the ones with nice color and cute designs or messages in it. But because of you...now I'll be looking at an apron with a different perspective. Thanks. :)

Hey!!!! dusting! that is another great use.... when someone unexpected is heard pulling up the driveway you can quickly swipe over some furniture with your apron - dusting it as you make your way towards the door to greet them!

I think I might wear an apron today when I wash walls! Thanks for all the suggestions!

I do know what an apron is but I usually use a towel. It would be a good idea to use them, considering that clothes can get dirty. I was a little thrown off by your "you youngin's" expression. What exactly did you mean by that? I don't want to get on your bad side, but I just wondered. What is the point of this entire question is what I am wondering. To put young people down or to ask people about aprins? I am sure there are a lot of things that younger people do or have that the older generation does not. It works both ways. (I am now 34, and some people still say I am young yet.But I'm not getting any younger.)

, but I wonder if most youngons today even know what an apron is. It just means what it says. I wonder if aprons are a thing of the past, along with most homemaking skills/art. This was not a question really. Just a thought. Ciao!

That's sweet.. Aprons really are useful, unfortunately I don't usually think to put one on until I've already splattered or gotten my clothing dirty. :)

Wow I never knew aprons have so many uses for them. I have never worn one in my entire 37 years :( sorry to say. My mother in-law still wears them when she cooks and my son wears one at school when they paint. After reading your discussion makes me want to go out and buy one :)

I know very few people that use aprons anymore...and I don't know why they don't. With all the splashing on clothes of grease etc. you would think they would still be a very useful article of clothing! I do use aprons on occasion. And have several different kinds...I remember growing up though that everyone wore one..and I remember being given the honor of serving coffee at other cousins weddings and having the cutest little aprons..that was part of the wedding. Then you got to keep the apron for a keepsake of being part of the wedding party! They don't do that anymore to my knowledge. Maybe we should try to revive the usefulness of the apron!

what a neat little tradition with the wedding - I have never heard of that practice, but I like it!

Hi, Modestah. You sure do have extraordinary ideas that have come from wearing an apron! All of your ideas are useful, indeed. I really need to buy me an apron. I have to have one of these essentials. It is a must for me.

I remember my grandmother always wearing an apron. I got that same ode yesterday and had to send it on yo my grandkids. Aprons certainly were useful way back in the day when the average women only had two dresses, One for church and one for home.
