Gratuitous cussing

In the books of some of my favorite authors, the dialogue is liberally sprinkled with g-damns, f--ks and it bugs me -- especially the taking of God's name in vain. While I try to skip the offensive words, I've still seen them and been aware that they offend the christian values I attempt to live by. I'm not going to stop reading books because of it. These authors (Nora Roberts, aka JD Robb and others) write great stories My question is -- does it bother anybody besides me? The same question applies to movies. Is all the cussing supposed to promote a touch of reality? Do people in general use that many explitives? I know -- sometimes they're appropriate! But every other word??? Hello! Thanks for letting me share.

It bothers me when it's in text that isn't spoken by a character, unless the book is written in first person. While it doesn't bother me so much if a character curses, but I shouldn't feel like the author is cursing me out. Since I curse myself, I can't really say that it is offensive to me, but I think it breaks the tone of the story sometimes, especially if every single character the person writes curses excessively. Not everyone in real life does so, thus not everyone in the book should do so. I don't mind if a character curses and it's in-character for them to do so, but it also really bothers me if a character comes across as not the kind of person to talk that way and then starts doing so all the time. It makes me feel like the author isn't really thinking about what the character would say.

My own tongue is not lily white either. It's funny to me that after posting this discussion I was in a public place and in response to something the clerk said, "Sh*t" was my first reaction, for which I apologized General cuss words don't bother me -- just the GD it. Thanks for your response, lecanis.

Some of the more sacreligious things bother me Joyce, but when you understand where certain slang comes from, I do not believe it all to be offensive in front of God. So much of our language is derived from another. Most of the slang you will find very intelligent beginnings that make perfect sense. Its how our puritan natures perceive it. ..... Now don't get me wrong I am not making excuses no one likes to hear every other word the f bomb, but there are some thoughts that not all of what we believe to be curses are actually indeed that.

Thanks for your response, Angel. I believe God just doesn't like his name slung around in cussing. It has nothing to do with puritanical thinking or roots. The words that come out of my own mouth would probably cause some of the ladies at church shudder. I have two vocabularies: one for company and one for the privacy of my own home.

Well, those words really bothered me a lot... and i guess it is one of the reasons why i shifted to reading the classics and then eventually children's books... i know that novels about the current times won't be that authentic without the cussing... and i cannot control the writers or editors about that... so my way is simply not to read them anymore...

I have found the stories so interesting, I don't want to give up reading the author because of the cussing. If it continues to bother me I'll either get jaded or do like you've done -- and switch genre. Thank you for your thoughts.

Yes it bothers me and I also see this in a lot of my favorite authors. I try to put it out of mind but I do not like it and sometimes they could do without it and not hurt the story at all. Of course sometimes some are appropriate but not a flood of them forheavens sakes.

Thank you, Hatley. Even though I put it out of my mind, it did register. I think the good Lord understands that I wasn't using his name in vain personally.

Although I admit that sometimes when I am extremely upset I may write explicit dialog. I do get offended when the dialog as such is repeated for nothing more than just using the word. I am not offended as much by the F word, in my mind it is not really a curse word as such (except if it is used like it is in MF and so forth), But the repeated gd's makes me put the book down (I have even put a few Steven King books down because of it), or I will turn the T.V. channel or turn it off completely.

I see from reading your comment that we're on the same page, although I haven't put an otherwise good book down because of it. Thanks for your response.
