What is the most money you have found in a public place?

The most I found was $25 in a cigarette case in a K-Mart parking lot. I found it behind a car. I left a note with my phone number on the car where I found it. Told them if they could tell me how much money, the denominations, and the case I would meet them somewhere and return it. I got a call later that day. The woman described everything, down to the name on the piece of paper inside the case. When I met up with her, she told me it fell out of the diaper bag pocket. She had 2 small children. Turns out, that was the last money she had until the next payday. She thought she'd never see it again and couldn't believe someone would go through the trouble of returning it. What did you do with the money you found? Was the opportunity there for you to find the rightful owner, or did you keep it because there was really no way to return it?

I don't think I've found more than a buck or two. I had a friend in college that found a roll of quarters in a Burger King parking lot and it was just what she needed. She had just told me that she needed money to wash her clothes. I also had a friend that found a wallet in a street. It had over $600 in it. He actually found the person it belonged to and the guy gave him $40. He was happy becuase he didn't expect anything in return. I tell that story when I work with youth in hopes they will be honest if in a similar situation.

wow - i am sorry about all your things being stolen. Here you were suppose to be experiencing a joyous occassion and have to deal with a bomb threat and theives! I am sorry to hear about that. And blnd - that's great that your husband got his wallet, with everything in it, back. I think that doesn't happen very often.

Isn't it funny how things work out? My husband was working out of state in a small town and lost his wallet. It had $500 in it. About a week after he came home, his wallet, with the creddit cards, AND $500 were returned to him via USPS.. There was a note from the gentleman who found it.. a retired police officer. There was no return address on the envelope, but we would have given him a reward like your friend got. Its a wonderful thing to be able to tell the young people you work with these stories. Perhaps, along with their upbringing at home and your grntle guidance, they will grow up to be decent, honoroable human beings. Thanks for responding

I once found $5. It was laying on the edge of the road. I kept it, there was no way of finding who it belonged to.

Well, about 15 yrs. ago or so, I found an envelope with around $300 in it sitting on the bench at a Bus stop where I was waiting for a bus. Problem was it did not have anymore information with it, so I had no Clue who to even try to turn it back into. I felt bad knowing someone had lost this much $$, but unfortunately, there was nothing I could really do about it. Hope it did not hurt them too bad.

In some cases.... I believe the money was there for someone to find for a reason. Yes we feel bad that it wasn't ours.. but it probably helped you immensely at a time when you needed it.
