It's just that the maid were more well known. The stories about them were usually told by men so they focused on the maids. In The Little Mermaid ( Disney ) there were mermen shown.

Hi Mrpippo Lol never heard about mermen but our Hindu religion books have many stories about mermaids. Above waist it is woman with boobs, below waist it is fish like. One can see them in our mythological movies and books. They are known as ‘Matshya-kanya’; means ‘Fish-woman’. Long back I heard about fisherman catching something similar in some seashore. Recently a doctor friend sent the attached photo to me. It looks like one, but he clearly told me it was of a baby, having birth defect. Thank you so much for this nice discussion.. Professor. . Cheers, have a great day ahead. God bless you. Welcome always.

I believe that mermaids are borne of the minds of sailors, so yes, they will always be female. There aren't many female sailors about, are there? I think that after a long time at sea, the sailors used to imagine that mermaids were there, to ease their troubled, or tired minds. There are probably mermen, but there are so few women at sea, that these are not fully noted. Brightest Blessings.

I saw a movie a while back about a girl mermais and later there was a boy mermaid. I thought it was a neat movie but I can't remember the name of it. I think that men ones should be called merman or mermen also.

I think they are always female because they were seen by sailors who had been at sea for a long time and had not recently seen any real women. In their frustrated imagining they would mistake a real sea-creature for an alluring feminine half-human being.
