Am I losing it

I stood this morning in our kitchen over which we have a shower room. My daughter was in there showering. I heard a noise and I looked everywhere to see where it was coming from. After looking at the fridge, the dishwasher, the washing machine and the oven I concluded that something pretty serious was going on and maybe there was a problem with something electrical elsewhere in the house. I searched high and low, but the noise disappeared one I had left the kitchen. Only when I returned to the kitchen and the noise stopped did I realise that it was the shower pump in the shower room all along! Do others have these nightmare scenarios that aren't?

I have had this, on lots of occasions, I will hear what I think is a huge rumble of thunder or an earthquake and my heart stops then it just turns out to be a rickety lorry going past outside. I remember once sitting at the computer as I am now when I heard what sounded to me like a huge explosion, I looked out of the window to see sparks coming down outside the window. My boys were all upstairs and I was convinced that they had been blown up in their bedrooms or that a plane had hit the house, I ran full pelt up the stairs expecting the worse to find everyone fine, it turned out that it was a firework that some kids outside must have set off and it had just hit the outside of the house!

I don't like Bonfire Night at all. It always sounds like we are in an artillery barrage here. They just love their fireworks. I find that I notice noise much more if I am alone in the house than when the rest of the family are here. The house really creaks at night too.

Our house is over 100 years old as well as creaking it shuffles, and by that I mean that at night or anytime you are on your own upstairs it sounds like someone shuffling outside the doors. I get a bit scared in the house from time to time.

Once, in my teens, I wasn't sleepy...and I was just playing with a tennis racket in the dark. I was tapping it on the floor enjoying the rhythmic sound. After around 15 mins of doing it, my mom called from the next room and asked if I heard a noise and I said 'no'! There had been a murder near our place a few days ago and mom was scared living in this big house alone with just two children. I continued with my tapping...and after sometime mom comes out franctically looking out of windows...and really scared. I asked her what it was and she said she's been hearing some noise and I asked her what kind of noise since I didn't hear anything and she said it was a tapping kind of a noise....lol...she wasn't amused...but I was!

Once I heard a strange frightening noise from the bath room when one of my guests was taking a shower. The horrible noise was stopped as soon as the guest stepped out of the shower.I just asked him what went wrong inside. He said 'noting I was just singing'. That is the only nightmarish noise I ever heard in my house.

You're not losing it. My cat does crazy things and he scares me a lot by doing things around the house. He will knock things over making really loud noises and it will startle me badly.

I can appreciate that one. We don't have a cat but in the Summer our neighbour's will sometimes sneak in and suddenly bash something and we all say "What's that" as if we have an intruder.

My kitchen has a flat roof and often I think there are people up on the roof because I can hear footsteps. Actually it is large birds, herring gulls, landing and taking off which make the noise with their big flat feet. I should be used to it after living here for nearly a year but I still sometimes find myself thinking there is someone up there.

I know what you mean. In our house in Devon we have a long verandah and the birds get on there. It can be quite alarming sometimes, especially in the evening just as the light is going for some reason. Seems a little spooky.

i don't think your losing it. it happens to me and my mom sometimes. sometimes its the ceiling fan in the other room turned on high or one of my little sisters left the computer on with a game running and it keeps making the same sound over and over again. we have an airport near our house so aircraft flies over our house all the time. so one day a helicopter flew over and i SWORE something blew up outside. i don't know why i thought that, but i did.

I am glad that it isn't just me. Talking of helicopters. One time at my parents house in the country we heard a helicopter overhead and it started to hover. Then it landed right outside the house. Turns out that it was the air ambulance come to pick someone up.
