MULTI-TASKING: Are you capable?

I taught myself a lot of things. Having a busy way of life, I was able to learn how to MULTI-TASK. I could do several chores all at once. Once I load my laundry in the washer, I would start preparing the ingredients for cooking, and once I started cooking, I would start washing the dishes I used for preparing the food. And while the food is simmering I would start vacuuming the carpet while waiting for the food to get done. Once I am done vacumming the carpet and the food is done. The laundry is ready for the drier. While the laundry is drying, I am ready to fix the mess in the bedroom. Hayyy... it was tiring but fun. I can also type in the computer while talking on the phone and having lunch all at the same time... and watching TV in the background too. Are you a multi-tasker too?

I thought everyone would go about other things while doing laundry. Can't just sit there and watch the machines. They do do the work for us. I have to multi task all the time. If I don't I get bored and sometimes I will quit and then go back to it later. I am the same way you are. Throw the laundry in and go about cleaning other parts of the house. But mind you I have to take it really easy and take my time and if I need a break I need a break. Back injuries and doing a ton of house work is not a good idea for me and I will end up paying for it in the long run. When I am on the computer I will talk on the phone and have something playing in the background wheather it be the TV or the radio or some sort of music playing. When I left work after my accident that's how I would go about my day at work. Prepairing checks for the employees, on the phone, talking with clients basically whatever that had to be done. All with some music in the background. Never really turned on the TV too much when I was at work.

Honey, we all have to multi task or we wouldn't survive as mothers. constantly planning the next move so to save a little time and energy. Be one step ahead! Thats a woman thing. Our minds are designed for this chore. Don't ask men to do this, Only give them one chore at a time. It is a well known fact!

definitely being a multi-tasker has got to be a prerequisite to being a mommy. how else would you be able to stir a pot with a baby on yer hip a phone wedged tween yer ear and shoulder while keeping an eye on the sink as it fills to do a load of dishes without yer head exploding? just simply walking down the hall to check the kids before going to bed, theres the picking up of toys or clothes along the way and putting them where they belong, while snapping light switches off as you walk on by. ive known very few men that are capable of the art of multi-task. answering my husbands simple question of "whatreya doin?" brings a listed response so vast he has actually interupted me with "omg stop, yer frying my brain!" he cant handle just the telling of the multi-tasking without it scattering his thoughts, much less do it!

Shell I have been lucky to have a fiance that can multi task as well. He works on the pipeline and does several jobs and can follow orders sort of speak to a tee. He has done great out there. As well as things around the house he's very good at it as well. Not all men are the same so we can't really put them all in that catagory saying give them one chore to do.

Men do multi- tasking too although it's mostly office stuff. There's no other way if you want to make it up the career ladder. I remember my former boss used to give me 5 to 6 new assignments a day and every time he does that he will say "give this priority!" or "stop what you are doing and do this first." I don't dare complain. So from making a speech I suddenly have to crunch some numbers and then turn my attention to making a memo. We carry this multi-tasking at home- read magazines and books while watching TV. While newer and better appliances made chores quicker, the commute is also taking longer. I multi-task while writing this blog..wait that's my timer. My roast chicken is ready. Gotta go!

I agree with you. Men are multi-taskers as office workers. I guess because they are trained to do it. And I do know a lot of guys who can do house chores and office work at the same time. You are one of them (I just included you to the list just now ). Thanks.

Actually, the description you give in your first paragraph is not multi-tasking, you are just doing one small task after another not switching attention back and forth continually between multiple tasks that are progressing at the same time. What you seem to be doing is organizing your time effectively to complete the one small task whilst you wait for another to require your attention. This is a different skill, thinks I, from the other example you cite; typing on the computer and talking on the phone. all the best urban

Yeah I am a big multitasker. When my mother was working i would get home from school and start babysitting my younger siblings. So i would have to prepare food for them, do my homework, clean if the house was dirty, and watch my t.v. shows at the same time. Now my mother is not working but I still find myself still multi-tasking because i have so much stuff to do.

Wow thanks. That actually brought tears to my eyes. I've had to help my mom as much as possible because she doesn't know much english. It's funny 'cause when i was eight years old i had to translate for her when she had to go to appointments and stuff and I didn't even know much english myself. Know i'm like a whiz in the english language and speak it as if I were actually born here.

Glad you are only joking!! But just think if you are good at multi tasking now with no children, then once you do have children you will be a whizz at it.

By comparison to you...no! I really don't multi-task well. There are a few things I can do simultaneously but, I can't really think of any right now. Other than unloading and reloading the dishwasher while I am letting something cook on the stove. If I try to multi-task while I am cooking, I forget about the food on the stove and, something might get burned. I am a good cook...but, not attentive enough to multi-task while cooking. I don't multi-task well at work either. There are a few things I can do simultaneously but, I prefer to finish one job before starting on another.

Well, there are really some people who wanted to be focus on what they are doing and I admire them too. Some works need to be done with great concentration and those people who do it make it better. I guess. Thanks for the response.

i am definitely a multi-tasker... i always tell myself to do the things that i have to wait first so that i can do other things while waiting... and by the time it finishes, i finish doing the other things as well... with such a limited time and busy schedule, i have to do it and i think i am doing it pretty well...

I'm very capable of multi-tasking. I'm just like you, do several chores all at once. But while I'm doing all of these chores I also have my 2 year old daughter on my hip. She is so spoiled, she always want me to hold her. So while I am cooking, cleaning, and on the computer I am holding her on my hip.

Yes I am in fact I cant do just 1 thing when it comes to house work or I get bored. I put the washing the the washing machine and then go wash the dishes if there is time I start cleaning the rooms (as I do them bit by bit) I have a ban on my hand and as I clean I put rubish in the bag. Then empty the washing machine and put another load and go put the clothes out to dry. I love talking on the phone and doing my laundry or tyding up. So everytime I have to do that I call a friends and work.

Oh yeah I multi-task! With a nine month old its the only way to get anything done. I usually give her a snack while i do dishes, so shes occupied in her high chair. I take care of her and clean different areas of the house while the laundry is in the washer and/or in dryer. I often cook, watch my daughter and do dishes. Multi-tasking is defintely the only way to get things done. Great discussion!

yep, I am capable of multi tasking. Two hours ago, I was chatting with my boyfriend in yahoo messenger, while I was talking to a friend over the phone. At the same time, I switched sites mylot, yahoomail, multiply and friendster. I respond to myLotters discussions, posted new pictures in multiply and friendster and read new emails. Fascinating, isnt it?

Yes especially in my line of work wherein you need to talk ,type and research at the same you really need to. You see I am working in a customer service industry, i answer around 60 calls a day, create each report for them and research whatever their queries are. It is just annoying sometimes supervisors tends to pressure like you have to finished after 10 seconds. I am able to do it okay, but there are instances that it is not being done prefectly. and we are being told that we do not know how to multi task. That is our sentiments that I share with my co workers. Thanks for bringing this up anyways :)

Well, that is life. I used to be a secretary too years ago, and being such... you have no choice but to do things beyond your job description. Your boss thing that you are a super hero who can do a lot of things presto. It's so exhausting. But it was my training ground too.

Multi tasking is the way of life these days isn't it? I believe that it is the only way of getting everything done in a day that needs to be. I find that I always have 2 or 3 things going at one time. I am used to being able to do more than one thing at a time. If I am mylotting, I am usually writing a list for the store or folding laundry in between posts. Some times I have something on the stove too. I almost always have a load of clothes in the washer or dryer. I think that the only way that mothers can keep ahead of the children and chores is to do more than one thing at a time.

I used to be a preschool teacher, and now I am a stay at home mom. Multi tasking is required for both. At work I would be tying someone's shoe, telling someone to do something and watching a 'situation' that was developing in another area of the room. I would be getting cots out for nap time while monitoring the bathroom and talking to the children. I had to always be doing at least 2 or 3 things. As a stay at home mom, I play with my son while I watch the news, make a mental to do list, put laundry in, then go change his diaper. Prepare his lunch and wash dishes while it is warming. Eat lunch with him while making my shopping list, writing out bills and going through the mail. Every trip we make is well planned to make sure I run all the errands I can on the way to and from his playgroup or doctor's appointment. Multi tasking is a way of life, the only one I know. It is a rare moment when I am doing only one thing. Even now I am doing research and flipping back and forth from mylot to other web pages.

Kudos to you. You are right, multi-tasking is a way of life. We need to adapt or else the world will stop right on our door-step. We need to keep up with time or else people who depend on us will stop living too. we are their only hope, so to speak. Thanks.

Yes I am definately a multitasker! I have 6 children so you get really used to doing things all at once. I sometimes think its cause I have to, other times, it just helps to save time. I am sooo looking for a vacation to myself one of these years, so I can sit and do nothin'! Oh and I've had a talk with my pc..it knows that I multitask and is ready to go for me daily! Have a great multitasking day!!
