What does the phrase 'He entered followed by his loyal retainers' mean to you. Silly answers are acceptable.

Well, I haven't quite got my 'silly' head on straight yet, so I immediately had a vision of the Emperor (of 'The Emperor's New Clothes') entering a beautiful chamber stark naked with a dozen or so people solemnly pretending to hold up his non-existent train! Now I am giggling at 'a dozen or so people solemnly pretending to hold up his non-existent train.' Isn't that another story ... 'The Great Train Robbery'? I didn't know that American for dental braces is 'retainers'!

It means... he entered with his Professional Advisors following him. I like the silly idea of the loyal dental retainer following his behind though!

Yes, it conjures up a strange picture doesn't it.

Hehehe, well a retainer in Americanese is a brace for your mouth, not for your neck or trousers, so it would mean he entered followed by his braces, which would be strange indeed.

It means he went into the room followed by some people who he paid some money to so they'd keep something for them.

bear and ragged staff - symbol of Warwickshire, also a popular pub name!
Something about going into a room followed by what would now be called an entourage. You know, like famous people have where they have tons of followy people.
