We love our cantelopes and buy them from the grocery store weekly. Well, a little while back my wife saved a few seeds and dried them out in the air. Then she planted them in a yogurt cup. Today we were pleasantly surprised to see 5 seeds sprouting up through the soil. Now my question is, I have heard stored bought fruits won't seed? Well these did and now I wonder if I will get fruits on them later this year? Have you ever planted seeds from a store bought fruit? If so did you get fruits once the plant matured? Thanks in advance all. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I think the reason people say store bought fruit won't sprout is because they often pick them so early the seeds haven't developed enough, then they are stuck in refriderations trucks where the 'seed growth' is stunted even more. They are correct yet wrong - it's not always possible but I actually grew an orange tree in Michigan from the seed of an orange that came from California. Of course the tree had to stay inside most of the year because of the cold and it did eventually die but I actually got 5 oranges off the tree - they were the size of large marbles :) I think keeping the canelope inside until the weather warms you'll have no problem at all growing totally healthy cantelope by planting outside once it's warm enough.

I was afraid it may not be warm enough here all summer but I guess it just needs full sun and warmth not tropical heat. Kind of cool you had that orange tree grow and bear fruit as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

No, you shouldn't have any problem growing cantelope - your winters are a little rougher than ours but think our summers are fairly close and we've grown cantelope here in Michigan many times. After your discussion it got me thinking where I might plant some myself this year.

it is iffy if it will develope fruit or not - thanks to such mega controllers as monsanto seed dna is being patented and things are being introdcued into the seeds genetics to make seed saving a non viable venture.

Yep. They are like people. You only know who the mother is. It is worth a small spot in your garden for the sake of curiosity and an update discussion in the fall.

I am not sure about most store bought foods, but I do know that watermelon will seed and grow fruit! My kids and I had a seed shooting fight last year while eating watermelon outside. They had watermelon plants growing everywhere at their dad's house! Hopefully you will get some yummy melon this year! I have grown potatoes from store bought potatoes before. It was years ago though.

It will be interesting to see if your plants will bear fruit. I though that most of the store bought fruits and veggies were sterile hybrids. They may grow, but not produce any fruits. Keep us up to date on how that works out!

It's not that the fruit won't seed, it's just that it's unlikely seeing as though they put sooo many preservatices into them. It literally kills the seeds, but there is a chance of them seeding. With me, I had an orange tree survive 3 years that I got from some old orange seeds lol. I did get -some- fruit from it, but birds beat me to them XD

Sure they will! And it's probably a better route to go, because you have seen and tasted the end product. As the fruit is, so is the seed. I've never heard the store bought fruit seeds won't grow. But my tomatoes and jalapenos are all from seeds that came from store purchased stuff!

Heck grandpa, I save seeds from peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes and anything else I can plant. Why buy them if they are free. Cantaloupes too! You should see a good harvest if you watch them and water them good. Cantaloupes require a lot of heat and water. Full sun.. My favorite!

You might get a normal fruit. But there is a great chance that the fruit from your seeds will not produce a very good cantelope. There are a lot of hybrids in the markets. I heard this yesterday, there is a salmonella warning on cantelopes from the stores. I am sure there is more info out there if folks want more info.

I never tried to grow anything from store bought fruit, but I also never heard that they wouldn't seed. The only thing I heard, from people I knew who had really nice gardens was that you couldn't use the seed from hybrid plants, because you might not get the results you want. I don't like cantelope much, except for once a friend of mine grew some that was really good, and sweet. He gave me the seeds to plant some for the next year, but when I tried to, I got plants with no fruit. I found out later that his didn't do any good either

I am hoping to get some fruit that is at least a low grade tasting melon. If anything it will be good mulch material. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I love cantaloupe! That is cool that they sprouted on you. The resulting plant will probably not produce the same type of fruit from which your original seed came. That is because most store-bought fruit is the result of hybridization and seeds from hybrid fruit, seldom will produce progeny that resemble the parents. I have never done this myself, so I am not sure how different the end result will be. I wish you luck in getting fruit that at least vaguely resembles what it is supposed to.

Oh wow. I've never tried anything like this, though I've thought about it. It depends on the kind of fruit how it will grow, and whether it will. For example, most appleseeds would yield trees that have bitter or otherwise unfit fruit. Instead growers use methods like grafting. I'm not sure about other fruit though. Good luck!

thats great.. if its growing then it will bear fruits when its old enough.. i think most seeds wrapped on paper are chemically treated, thats why it cant grow or hard to grow
