The Lottery.... and taking jobs from others.

If you won a huge lottery jackpot - would you go back to work? That question is always asked and we all say we wouldn't and then think those that do are stupid. Why? You got all you need? Today I saw a Yahoo news video clip about a guy in england that won 2 million jackpot. He worked at McDonalds. He quit his job, did whatever, and then went back to mcDonalds and they hired him back as the fry cook he was there before. Why? he said he got bored. "you can only relaxe so long". They also showed clips about about 12 women shcool lunch ladies that pooled together and won 95 million to splie between them. Most of them went back to work. Again, they got bored staying home and doing nothing. Well, okay, fine - why didn't they tavel, see the world, take friends and family on trips andt hat's the fun part- there is so much they could have done, (in my opinion ) to not "get bored" instaed of going back to work. These ladies said they just missed the kids too. So here's my problem with this. They have more money than they will spend in a lifetime. Interest alone is more than their paychecks will ever be...so they satisfy themselves and go back to work.....taking a job that someone else that really needs an income just to survive could have had, but now doesn't have the option, cause someone that doesn't need the money got bored and took their job. Seems to me that these "bored" people are taking valuable jobs from the needy..just cause they are bored. Why don't they go volunteer somewhere? School all over could use volunteers in all parts of the school, the libraries could use them, social centers could use volunteers. Tkae your money and sponser something for your neighbor hood or city. So much they could do to not "be bored" yet they take a valuable job for someone that needs it...just cause they are bored and tired of relaxing. Why don't they start a business, hire others to work it and make more money, create some jobs for others that need a salary and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be bored running a business! What do you think? What would you do? And how long would it take you in the first place to "get bored" enough that you'd want to go back to a low paying job that you had in the first place?

I think it shows very little intelligence and imagination if someone with that amount of money gets bored and wants to go back to work at McD. I agree with you there is so much he could do with that money which would benefit other people, make him feel good and certainly not be bored. I think some people just have a very limited outlook and cannot see what life has to offer. You have to take every chance and opportunity. There is no need for anyone to spend their time relaxing and getting bored. It's all out there, even if you don't have 2 million to spend, but it would get you a lot more if you do.

I would definately also be too bored if I didn't DO something! That being said, I would probably start my own business (or expand the one I have) rather than working at a traditional job. Especially with the economy the way it is, it would be nice to give back to others.

And if you get bored, why would you want to go work for someone else? Why not work for yourself or something like that. Just think if you give up your job, you are doing something for someone else, and letting them have a job and then you get to go have fun with your own job! It isn't just sit home and watch tv and eat chocolates and read love stories, it is doing something, just doesn't have to be at the expense of someone else. Just to many things a person could do if they had plenty of money, than just go back to the old grind stone!

I really don't know what I would do,probably won't ever get the chance to find out lol but I know I wouldn't be able to stay at home,I get bored with a weeks vacation if I am staying at home so I would have to do something,Traveling would be fun for awhile but I like being at home so I would probalbly get bored with that too.Volunteering could be fun and even rewarding.Owning my own business would be pretty cool and I wouldn't have to go in unless I wanted to,well I think I have changed my mind,I would quit the job I have now open a business and work for myself, and of course if it was alot of money I would share with others and charitys.Have a great night!

I agree with everything you have said and have said the very same things so many times myself. I really hate those people they make me so mad If I won the lottery and I was working, I wouldn't even tell my boss I just wouldn't turn up for work. I have an incredibly long list of what I would do if I won and I doubt I have enough time to do everything. I can't understand why they want to work, it is such a soul destroying thing to do. There is so much to see and do in this world. Most of the pleasure I would get from winning would be helping my friends real life and online.

I'm with you on that - if you have the opportunity to go see the world, why not? All you could see, learn, see the past, there is just so much to do! How could that bore anyone! IF you get "worn out" then volunteer or learn how to invest... good grief the list goes on.. But return to McD's? Sorry, he should just give the 2 mil away and got back to where he was if that is the only place he wants to be!

Foxfire - Okay, I hadn't thought of that, but you got it - if they are so happy, why make waves!!!!

That's another thing that I can't understand is, why these people even do the lottery in the first place if they're so happy with their min wage jobs.

I think that guy is really lucky that they hired him back. If I won two million dollars, I was explain to my boss that I hit the jackpot and need some time off and I think they would understand. If they told me I couldn't take some time off then I would quit I guess and find another job when I'm ready. I would just need enough time to take off to figure out what I would do with this money. I think that's how the rich stay rich is working while you have money :)

Yes there is some work to "staying rich" but 2 mil needs "help" from most likely minimum wage at McDonalds? Go invest it! Keep yourself occupied with learning how to invest it and "stay rich". But using mini wage to stay rich...not only is that IMO, stupid, but greedy - let a person that needs that job have it - and go volunteer somewhere - tons of hospitals take voluneers..

I'm pretty sure that I could find something to do with my time if I had a few mill in the bank. I don't think these are jobs people are clamouring for. I don't see a line up at McDonalds for people wanting to get hired. Or, lunch ladies for that matter. They clearly miss the people they worked with, and want to continue the contact. I don't see anything wrong with it.

No, they don't usually "clamour" for McD jobs, but that kind of job is a very common place the young ones start at and the older ones end up at and some in the middle. Lunch lady - yeah, those are common jobs people look for. The reason, is to hope for advancement for a better paying job. These are entry level jobs, they are sought after. Been there, done that. And even if they aren't sought after, they both are always filled, so someone somewhere is looking and applying for them. IF htey miss their friends, call them on the phone and make a date. Offer to work for free, meet them for lunch. Just don't take the job from someone that desperately needs it.

With that kind of money I could pay off all my debts and bills, and maybe even get a new car too, but I would have to invest too, something secure to the money invested would provide me with an income to I can continue to pay my bills. I would, however, want to do some voluntary work, maybe with kids. I don't think I could sit on my backside all the time.

I commend you. That is the best plan as far as I am concerned... secure yourself and if you "get bored" go volunteer, but don't take a job from someone that needs it. I'm sure there ar tons of places where you could volunteer for kids - I'd do it to.

I know that I wouldn't get bored! Then again I don't work outside the house now. I personally don't think there is anything wrong with these people who go back to work though. If the job is still vacant when they want to come back, then I guess they should have filled it with one of those people people that needed the job so badly when they first quit. Maybe there weren't any other applicants or maybe they were the most qualified. Who knows? The turnaround rate at a place like McDonalds is so fast, I really don't think they are taking jobs from anyone. If they wanna work, more power to them! It's not for me to judge.

I'm not judging anyone. Thing is, if they are bored, why go back to McD's? I mean, those people work hard and it is a constant movement and nothing particular "wrong" with the job, but at the same time, is that all you need to not be bored? I'd think that if all it takes for someone to not be bored is to work McD's, they weren't to bored. Why not go back to school and learn something that you ahve always wanted to do or be. Expand yourself so you wont' get bored again!

Gee interesting perspective you have, I never thought of it like that. That these people who have so much money are taking away jobs from people who need it. I guess I tend to agree with you there. I cannot understand why they would want to go back to a job that does not give them much satisfaction anyway. They can live off there interest or start a business that they are passionate about. However if I won the money. I would be smart with it, invest and travel. I would miss my job dearly though as my job is my life and my passion. Primary school teaching for me is never about the money. So I probably would not go back teaching in schools however I might start my own tutoring franchise all over the country as I need to feel like I am making a difference. I would probably start this business a year after I won the money. As i have lots of travelling to do in the meantime, lol.

Private tutoring would be great! Most of the time kids can't get one on one with teachers so tutoring is necessary - you would be able to do so much for kids that need it and you'd have fun to, and someone else would have a job they need! Happiness all around!

I agree with you that they are taking jobs from people who need it. I've always said that if I won the lottery, I would stay on my job only long enough for my employers to find someone to take my place. I would never leave them in the lurch. Some people say they would just chuck the job the next day. That's not being fair with the people who used to pay you. I really don't think I could get bored if I had that much money. I would like to have just enough so that I could travel whenever I wanted, help out my family and be able to afford my hobbies. I don't want so much that it would become a business in itself. Wonder how many people could say that?

I'd do exactly the same thing. There are TONS of things I'd like to do - tour America for one! I could care less about touring other countires. This one has everything! I don't think I could make it into a business either, but I'd sure love to have some to learn about investing and stuff like that!

Honestly even if i won the lottery I'd still want to work. I LIKE my job. I was out of work for 6 months and after a time i caught up on all the little things at home i squeezed in between shifts...I developed some new hobbies but my job is something i reallu enjoy..and I'd miss it. I wouldnt start my own business because i dont want to be a boss..i never have wanted to and its not something i strive for. I'd work for my own enjoyment..and the paycheque would be put towards investments. Sure so many million now might be alot of money but in 20 years 50 years whos to say that same amount wont be small change. I dont view it as stealing jobs from others...if someones more qualified for my job theyd have it.

It all depends on the job you do. Sometimes the job hires you for what you know...other jobs will hire you for what you dont know....so they can pay you the lowest wage possible.
