Ok so as some of you may or may not know, this past February I bought my Nikon D40 camera and I'm in love!!! So I've deciced to step out of the box and go crazy taking pictures and work on a portfolio with the hopes of achieving my dreams of becoming a photographer. Ok so... This evening I'll be meeting with a couple getting married 4/20/08 and I'll be taking the pictures! This is my first job and I told them that - I'm new, I have no experience. In exchange for their courage and trust in me...I'm taking the pictures for free. I'm also doing a wedding in September but that one I'll be getting for. I'm only charging $300. I'm going to be taking a D-SLR class that starts 4/24 until 6/12. In the fall I'll be taking a few more classes. Oh I'm SO excited!!! WOO HOO!!! Party party. I would post the link to my blog for you guys to see some of the pictures I've taken BUT I guess that's not allowed since the post I started before miraculously disappeared!

The class that starts on the 24th is on Monroe Ave - a place called Genesee Center for the Arts & Education. It'll be from April 24 to June 12. It's only $145...James is helping me. Then in September I'm taking a couple here at work - MCC. I'm VERY excited. Check out my blog. Hopefully this won't be deleted! http://maryannrivera.blogspot.com

How exciting! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your camera!!! And good luck with the class and the weddings!!! Doing weddings for cheap (or even free!) is a great way to build up a portfolio and gain experience! You should consider using your wedding earnings to buy different lenses, filters, flashes, and other equipment for your DSLR! Also, have you considered selling stock photos? It is a great way to make some extra money with your photos, plus help get you some exposure. If you're interested learning more about stock, I have lots of information and resources on my website: http://www.lindsaydean.com/sellstock.html Also, if you're interested in selling prints of your work I would recommend RedBubble. It is free to join, and you can upload your photos and put them on framed prints, canvas prints, posters and cards. Every time someone buys one of your photos, you earn a percentage of the sale. Also, it is a great artist community and you can get a lot of feedback on you work! The website is http://www.redbubble.com Best of luck to you following your dream of being a photographer!

Wow, that's awesome! Thanks for all the great information. I'll have to go on the sites and read up. My mom and one of my co-workers thought I was crazy for doing the wedding for free. The way I see you have to invest to get where you want to be. This is my very FIRST wedding and the couple know this. I met with them yesterday and they're excited just like I am. I'm going to go check out the conservatory where they are getting married to check out what I'm working with. I agree about using the earnings for filters, lenses, etc... I'm very thankful that my bf is being very supportive and encouraging. It'll be fun! Thanks.
