Amount of trash generated

I realized tonight that my family of 5 generates about 1 13-gallon bag of trash a day. That seems like alot! As far as I know, my area does not offer recycling...to do that I would have to drive the stuff into town- about 40 minutes away. (We do return soda/beer cans.) But, I will double check on that because I could be wrong. This much trash is a problem not only for environmental issues, but we have many wild animals out here that will get into the garbage so it has to be in a closed container when put out for the garbage truck. We will probably start separating food from paper at least. I also would like to have a compost bin for the food stuff.
How big is your family and how much trash do you generate? Is that all trash or do you separate out the recycling?

That seems like a lot to me, but I don't have a family of 5.
With just Tom and I here, we usually have one bag, sometimes a second one is partially full when we empty the bathroom and office, etc, into it.
We don't separate for recycling, but lately I've been reusing cans and such to start vegetable seeds.

I think my family of 3 generates more trash, actually. Especially since my little boy is still in diapers.
I used to live in Germany... we were required to recycle (didn't have a choice).. when I moved back to the states, it felt very wierd to just throw everything in the trash can.
