I was wondering if any of you here on myLot are professional wedding photographers? I have been thinking about getting into the business for a while now, but it's been anything but smooth for me. I have taken a couple of photography classes and looked at many people's blogs. I tried to find someone in my area to apprentice with, but no one seems to be interested in the free help or trying to help someone new learn the craft. I would like some advice on how to get started.

I just did the wedding pictures for a friend of mine on Valentines day....and they turned out awesome...I also did a wedding memory book for them. Maybe you can attend a friends wedding or someone you know....take pictures on the side and put together an album so that you have something to show people...usually if they are good then they will show them around....make sure to have a calling card attached so they can give your information out to whomever looks at their book! Just an idea!

I am currently in the process of doing that right now. Two of my friends are getting married in May. The first one that I'm taking photos for is May 3, she hired a professional, but wants me to take more pictures too. My other friend that's getting married on the 24th of May didn't have enough money to hire a professional so I told her I would come and do engagement photos, bridal photos, and fill my memory card up at her wedding. I told her I'd photoshop some of them for her and put them all on a disk and do it all for free so she can order what she wants and I can build my portfolio. Thanks for the advice, I would like to see some of the pictures you took for your friend's wedding if you have some available online?

Wedding picture - Bride and Groom at Valentines wedding.
I don't have them online....but all I used was my digital camera and had the pictures done on the Kodak machine at walmart...they were fantastic...even the 8x10!

I have been taking digital photgraphs at weddings for years. It takes a lot of practice and learned skills. Remember, the bride and groom are putting all their memories for the future into your hands. If you screw up, not only are you mesing up yourself, but someone else's wonderful moment. With that being said, you can go to a wedding and practice. Don't get in the way, but start taking pictures. Go talk to a professional and ask if yu can watch up close during his "posed" pictures. Mos of them would loved to show you just what they do!
