I just don't get it!

Earlier today, I saw this announcement posted on our office bulletin board regarding a seminar scheduled this coming Saturday. The four hour seminar is all about counterfeit money detection. I have attended the same seminar for one whole day recently and so I told my immediate supervisor about it and asked if I could just attend to my class instead. She told me that it was not possible since it is required and she told me to leave a seatwork for my students instead. I thought about it for a few minutes and asked my dean if I could be excused and she told me the same thing. I asked a friend working at the Central Bank to ask them if there are any new updates with regards to counterfeit money detection and she said there was none. I can't understand why I need to attend something that I already have given a certificate for. I do not want to waste my time. I would like to use it for something productive like my lectures. I asked my superiors to explain why I had to attend the same seminar again and all I got was "because it is required". I just don't get it!

You just have to read my response "because it is required" . That is really weird but I think you cannot escape it. I will just say go on and attend that seminar. And since you've attended that seminar already, make yourself shine . Participate well in the discussions and ask difficult questions. I'm sure you will leave a mark and you can make your superiors proud of you. Enjoy the seminar and make new friends as well.

maybe it sounds wasting your time. have you tried ask the central bank if the speaker is still the same? sometimes felt that way, for us it's useless. there is a tendency that different speakers may handle the seminar...meaning another point of view in additional to the things you've heard last time. every person have their idea and interpretation of words or something. you considered also the situation, it is required so you have no choice except to follow the command. like attending a class it is really really bored if a teacher don't know how to make the class interesting and fun. however. if the teacher know how to entertain the student aside from lessons, well your students will interested on what you have say. they will listen to you whatever you do.

Well, the BSP sends the same lecturers for these seminars so I don't think I will be expecting anything new...

I think usually this kind of training stuff is setup to follow the procedure. Like the code of business conduct in our company, we need to attend every year. It serves as a refresher or reminder so that we comply to the code of conduct and do not violate it. I believe the purpose of attending the same class is meant for the same intention too (as a refresher or reminder in case we forget about it). Since you are pretty sure about the same stuff being repeated, I suggest you just attend the class at the early session and excuse yourself after the attendence being marked down . This is cheating, but it might help resolve your dilemma. Just a suggestion though

That sounds about right these days. It seems that alot of people do nothing but waste time. they do not understand the importance of letting someone be prodyctive in other ways, especially when they have already been informed os such other things. That is why alot of people stay behind. They keep going over the same things time and time again and waste alot of peoples precious, valuable time that they could be doing something else.

Sometimes there are other reasons for requirment to attend something you've already attended before. I'm sure there is another reason but I get the feeling that all you will hear is "it's required". Just attend, since it looks like there is no way out of this one.
