I reformat my computer's hard drive every year. This is to have a fresh installation of Windows and other applications. Of course I do backup my data before reformat. How about you guys?

I reformat the hard drive atleast twice a year. I actually do it whenever my computer is very slow and has many viruses. I would say that there are really certain viruses and other harmful entities in our computers that are so difficult to delete.

yeah, format is the only way to destroy or delete the virus. Make sure back up all the data before format.

hello learn i format my computer's hard discs once in two weeks, i know its bad for my pc, but i don have a choice, my computer becomes a fun place for viruses, i don know where they come from, the smartest anti viruses even gave up, so i back up my files and then i format it, am tired of them, last time i lost about 21GB of all my musics because of them! thats why i reformat it once in 2 weeks!

Are your backed up files even infected? I had to reformat twice in a day when I found out my backed up files were infected. It even infected my 250GB external HDD, darn. I think formatting every 2 weeks is killing ur HDD. Better check on ur backed up files whether they are infected or not.

When my computer was using windows 98se, I use to format it twice a year. Now with a newer machine and now with windows xp, I format it 2 or 3 times a year. But I have this computer at work and I have Vista installed on it since January this year and so far I have already formatted it 2 times. It seems that the VISTA software has still lots of bugs, and reformatting it seems the only solution. The only problem is that I forgot to partition the hard drive and stash my files to a spare partition. So when the Vista Machine conked out(blue screen and it wont boot), all my files were deleted and I have to make do with the old files i stashed away in my flash drive. So it all depends on the type of software/Operating system installed in your machine and how reliable is it. So my suggestion is this "before you migrate to a new OS, let the technology age out a bit, for there are still lots of bugs in these new programs".

I try to wait as long as possible between formats. I typically do it every year and a half to two years though.

I had to reformat my hard drive recently because the system 32 got lost and I don't even know why. I was suspecting that my 6 year old moved the folder or might have accidentally deleted the file. Anyways, it's a good thing because I also found a virus, so that was taken cared of as well.

Only if its the easiest way of solving my pc problems, what i do nowadays is to keep most apps on an external hard drive, so if i have to reformat, i have all my apps etc externally stored.
