Thoughts about Germans!

Germany

I've lived in Germany for about 2 years now and I've been asked to prepare a seminar / workshop on how foreigners perceive the German people. I'd appreciate if you could share what comes to your mind when you think of Germans. What virtue that they have you appreciate the most (if any)? Is there any characteristic they have that you'd change? Why? I appreciate a lot your comments. It might help a lot in preparing this seminar. Cheers,

I lived in Germany for about 7 years. I married a German girl and my children were born there. As to how I see the Germans: They are hard headed, very determined, very hard working and intelligent people and if you changed anything about them, they wouldn't be German. I remember what my German Landlord told me many years ago. He said, if your going to be a ditchdigger, just make sure you are the BEST ditchdigger, and nothing less. That is the Germans. A proud people and if they like you, that is good. If not, leave! That was over 40 years ago, but I still miss Germany, and the Germans.

Thank you for your reply. You are right, Germans are determined. So, kannst du immer noch Deutsch sprechen, oder lesen? Das sollte kein Problem für dich sein, da du hier 7 Jahre gewohnt hast, oder? Cheers,

Hey, thanks for your comments! Quite long, but really good! Well, I've lived here for about 2 years now, and I enjoy the German humor. As you said, they are generous, they are time and work oriented, and that's how they are where they are in technology. But I've also seen their more soft human side. Since you like history, try then comparing Germany and Japan. Than country was also involved in the WW II. But they haven't acknowledged their fault. Again, thank you for your comments!

Japan Apologize! As far as the Japanese are concerned, they were the victims of the war, and that's despite the fact that the 'Rape of Nanking,' shocked even the Nazis. Seriously, Japan needs to come clean about its past if it actually expects to play a bigger role on the international stage that it should be playing.

I'm aware there are many who have various perceptions of the Germans (as they have with pretty much any group of people on the planet). I had a great many German friends at university and found them to be no different to myself other than the language of course. In comparison to the other Brits though i found them to be generally more polite and easy going with less anger and malice. Many of my fellow Brits tend to be rather ignorant, horrible tourists and oblivious to other languages and ways of life. A bit like the perception of Mr Bush and his blinkered view of countries which aren't America (hehe). I learned to speak German so i guess that helped my friendship at uni.

Thank you for your comment. You are right, Germans aren't so different from any other people group. They just value good timing, efficiency, honesty, etc and they organize their lives according to those values. It might also be true that native English speaker don't feel the urge to learn another language, since most people can speak their language, or at least have a basic knowledge of it. That may be the reason for their lack of interest to pick up a second language. Have a nice day

I've visited Germany quite a few years ago and enjoyed it immensely. I found the German people to be understanding -- they tolerated my attempts to speak German, lol! They are also very accommodating. I doubt if there is anything that I would change. The Germans are people, just like other nationalities, and have their share of good and bad, just like everyone else. What turns me off is an obnoxious person of ANY nationality.

I think of them as a Robust people. With lots of Vigor! They laugh hard - and have great music.... They are also a strong people and strict/stern but over all just. They are a sturdy people - with a bold physique, square shoulders and square jaws. :) I also think that they are a proud people.
