A very odd yet interesting incident on a desktop

April 12, 2008 4:36am CST
So, I know some neighboring kids. I regularly fix their computers because the kids use it recklessly. So one day I get a call, and they tell me there is something REALLY weird going on with the computer. Their window xp downgraded itself into window 98. And of course, I was thinking 'what the heck are they saying' of some sort, so I decided to check it out. Very much to my surprise, their window xp DID roll back to window 98. Now how this happened is beyond me, as their computer never had window 98 installed on it, nor did any of the harddrives have any data on it. But there it was, a window xp computer overnight turned into a window 98. Does anyone know anything about this?

This is quite impossible. Windows XP and Windows 98 are totally different and incompatable systems. You cannot even upgrade Windows 98 to Windows XP, the Windows 98 would be totally uninstalledd to male way for Windows XP.

I've never heard of such a thing. I wouldn't even have the slightest clue why, or even how it would do such a thing? I have some theory's but uh. They're no more then theory's as i've actually never heard of anything like this happening before. G'luck to you on figuring this out, or maybe someone can pop in and shine some light on this. I'm curious too, and it makes me worry about my Windows XP lol. I suppose i shouldn't be too worried though, i've had this computer forever and that's never happened to me. =p Poor family, =O

hi raypenbar, i think its not possible to roll back from windows xp to windows 98, how could that happen? may be they installed it them selves, windows xp and 98 are almost different in every way, or may be they change their desktop appearance to windows classic, and i never heard of that, i heard many problems, but never been in it or never heard it, try googling you will find some thing from the experts like from thecodeproject.com!

That is really weird, I've never seen pr heard of that before. Only thing I can think of is they may of had a problem and tried to reinstall themselves but installed 98 and are not telling you the whole truth. But hey, who knows, I hope you figure it out or at least not run into that problem again.

I am very confident that an operating system can never roll back to the earlier version. This is some thing that i am hearing or seeing for the first time and i dont believe this. I bet that there is no chance of this happening. Might be the kids might have played a prank on you by installing windows 98 and saying that the Windows XP did roll back to Windows 98. Once again i am very sure that this could never happen untill and unless The microsoft does that for their users.

this sounds really weird but it would havew had to be on the computer somewhere unless that computer is linked to another computer that has window 98 on it. my computer is linked to my sons so we can share various programs. other wise your computer must have window 98 hidden somewhere. this is a real puzzle isn't it?too bad as windows xp is so much better than 98I have 2000 andits just great.

Hmm I've never heard of it but perhaps some fool thought it might be funny to install a different Operating System?
