Grilled Cheese Sandwich - my favorite - is it yours? How do you make it?

I love grilled cheese sandwiches. my kids and grand kids love grilled cheese sandwiches. I just butter the bread and place in a skillet to toast and then flip. But... they get boring ... so ... How do you make your favorite grilled cheese sandwich? What do you use, how to you assemble it, what dont' you specifically do? Amd I have also noticed that as much as I like mine, if ordered in a resturant, they just seem to have a better taste (my GH orders them and I taste her's - I would NEVER PAY for a grilled cheese sandwich!) What are your suggestions or tricks of the trade!

Yummy, I love grilled cheese sandwiches. I do them at home and I also have them sometimes when I go out. PErsonally I like the grilled cheese sandwiches that I make home the best because a lot of places make them with those slices of kraft cheese and the taste is not the best. When at home I make them with my favorite cheese/s and I often add ham as well - what we call back home a " tosta mista" - I use the little toaster oven to make mine. I toast each slice with a slice of cheese already on top, until the cheese is melted and really nice. Them I add a slice of ham and "close" the sandwich . I often serve it with a couple of olives, baby dill pickle, and a slice of tomato , but all of these on the side. Top it of with a glass or orange juice freshly squeezed and I'm happy :)

MY favorite cheeses for grilled sandwiches are cheddar - really yummmy - Havarti and Gouda. The two last ones melt so nice that I can't resist. I even use Gouda and Havarti with crepes. Make a big one, really thin, start cooking it, when it's nice and done on one side turn it and when it's almost done I add a nice thick slice of Havarti or Gouda, fold the crepe and let the cheese melt. When it's all melted into the plate it goes and it's sooooo gooood! :):)

Well I"m hungry now - 6am, think I'll have a grilled cheese for breakfast! I think to, although I grill in a skillet, that once nearly grilled, I will pull it out nad put it in the toaster oven to crisp it up a bit more, maybe add some flavor. I like the american cheese slices, but REALLY like cheddar! More gooey and I just like cheddar better than american. Just that American is already perfect sliced and not as much mess as to slice it myself!

This may sound gross but it is super good, my kids love them. I make the grilled cheese the regular way but in between the pieces of cheese I put a few slices of dill pickles. I also do bacon and tomato- no pickles on occasion. I can't figure out why restaurant grilled cheese is better but it is.

Well, other than the tomate - it sounds pretty good to me!!!I will dice up some onion and put between the slices of cheese! I dont' know what they do to it a resturants, either. I just figured maybe it was the griddle they use, maybe hotter than mine so it cooks faster so maybe that was why.

That sounds fantastic - minus the garlic. Me and Garlic are not very good friends! But the rest..makes me want to make one right now!

I make mine with American cheese most of the time, but I will sometimes use provelone cheese. I put mayo and one slice of cheese between 2 slices of bread. I butter both slices of bread and grill it in a pan until golden brown.

I get out all of my items, bread, cheese, butter, skillet, and all that. Then I turn on the skillet and put some butter in it instead of on my bread. Lay a piece of bread in it, lay a piece of cheese and then a piece of bread on top of that. Then grill it, flip it, grill it some more and BAM...its done. If I dont have sliced cheese then I will take some block cheese and cut a thin slice and make it with that. I do like grilled cheese with tomato soup. Normally I make them if I am going to eat them or my husband will make them.

Quite often nothing better! Just watched a "throwdown" by Bobby Flay, and there is a place in NJ that is nothing but grilled cheese on the menu! I believe there were 31 different options!

I love grilled cheese! I like using a flavorful cheese like munster. It has a good taste and melts really well. It's much more exciting than regular american cheese. To dress up my grilled cheese I sometimes use tomato, or bacon. I've even used thinly sliced spring onions before (and it was very good). Good bread is also important. I usually use wheat, becuase that's what I like. But grilled swiss cheese on rye bread is also very good.

I've used swiss cheese and rye bread and that is good. Amazing what you can do to a simple ingredient sandwich and make them fabulous! I am trying to collect these ideas to help my son http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1482114.aspx to stock his kitchen and become a "cooking Dad".

My kids really like them I don't like to order them at fast food restaraunt as they are always really greasy. My kids like for me to put a thin piece of ham in the sandwhich too that makes them good otherwise I fix them normal just butter the bread and put it in frying pan with a piece of cheese and a piece of ham.
