Let's get the trolls where it hurts!

The countless discussions that are posted regarding the infamous star rating are just feeding their sick egos. Lets face it you can post until your fingers go numb and you will not change anything. The trolls who are causing the star fluctuation are achieving exactly what they intended to do. Cause distress in some myLotter, I am NOT one of them, why do we not get them where it hurts..by ignoring their efforts. I respond to discussions from my email notification I do not see anyones star until the originator brings it to my attention with another discussion. I think the Star system is a bunch of rubbish and in no way indicate what I think of the member. If all the person posting the discussion wants is sympathy because we know it will not change anything then okay all your friends can feel sorry for you and commiserate with you. As of now I am not going to respond to any more of there type of discussions. A parting remark for all the newbies as the star system is computed by percentage once you achieve your 100 points it only takes 1 negative rating to affect your star, However for all people with i.e. 5000 points it takes 50 points to reduce 1% so it is almost impossible to change your rating. Just enjoy the time you spend on myLot and ignore the frigging' star!

Hear... Hear... People take My Lot far too seriously. Some get very emotional or uptight or stressed out or even abusive if their star is not where they want the rating to be. Sure, we can take My Lot seriously enough to want to respond to people sensibly & perhaps offer them help, or just learn something new, but whether one is a star rated 5 or 10 makes no difference to your value as a person. And it probably doesn't make any difference to one's earnings either.

I too do not think the star has any influence on our earnings. I just post what I think will be helpful or add to the topic and if it bothers someone enough to go on a vendetta against me then so be it. I may have helped someone in that respect by giving them something exciting to do in their meager life.

As you know the Programmer is coming out with a similar discussion. I was quite amused by your last comment. It is infantile to get worked up about My Lot & go on vendettas.

I have said similar things in the past, and thought even more of them. It has taken me over six months to move up one percentage point in my ratings, and that is because of the number of posts I have. Those are not the discussions I reply to, and not the ones I post. I do not play the games. Like you, I respond from e-mail, and every one of my friends is a blue star friend in my book.

I never pay enough attention to my star to notice what the percentage is but you did make me curious and it looks as if I have not budged up or down in about 8 months.

Heather I agree with you on this but it upsets me to see all these People so upset about it it is sad that People are doing this Including to you Why do Mylot not get rid of this stupid Star you and I know know it was not here at the beginning On the other Site they would not get away with it because when they rate you it shows who has rated you so why not get some sort of a system here or just get rid of it Hugs

I agree. Get rid of it. I do not need a stupid star to validate who I am. The last time stars counted for me was in the 1st grade .

I also respond from my emails. I have decided who to include and every week I go through and add or subtract users because I have so many friends that I love on mylot and can not respond to them all so I kinda rotate them! I love the color blue ...it's my fav so I do like having a blue star but won't die if it changes! xxxxxx

I went through all my friends yesterday and deleted anyone who had not logged on it a month. Now my friends list is so small I can really pay attention to all their postings.

Of course, and I do consider this when dealing with such discussions. The only thing I would bring up though, is that another possibility exists... that it might be trolls, but it could also be someone higher responsible for some of this. With this, a few members were also noticing more deletions, and some very peculiar posting errors. It maybe nothing, but certainly peaked my suspicion.

I'm bored to tears with discussions about stars. Yesterday morning there was 8 discussions about them on the first page of "top discussions". I've responded to a few but I'm done with it now. No more! I personally think there is nothing wrong with the concept of having stars. It's supposed to be a fun thing. If everyone acted like adults about it there wouldn't be a problem but unfortunately they don't. Some people are obsessed with their star rating. I have no idea why - it doesn't seem to make any difference to earnings. I understand that if someone has put in a lot of effort on here they may feel slightly disheartened when their ratings drop, but to obsess over it? To be hurt or upset by it? I'm sorry, to me that's just an absurd response to what is after all only a change in ratings on a flipping discussion forum! It really, really isn't that important. As to why some people's ratings are falling I don't know the reason, but it could be due to a number of things. It doesn't have to be trolls. Some people just like using the negative rating button. I've read all sorts of reasons from people saying why they negatively rate others. Personally I didn't think any of them were good enough reasons, but the people I'm talking about are not trolls! They are just other myLot members who have a different way of looking at what merits a negative rating. I'm not convinced that just one or two people negatively rating others is going to have that much impact anyway. I'm not familiar with all the ins and outs of the myLot rating system but I would have thought it would take more than one or two people to make someone's rating drop significantly, particularly in the space of a few days. Apart from anything else, if it IS trolls that are responsible, then starting discussions weeping and wailing about stars falling is giving them exactly what they want. I just think if someone is childish enough to take satisfaction in negative rating surely that will be exactly the sort of reaction they would enjoy seeing. My suggestion for myLot admin (not that they will pay any attention mind you) is to do away with the negative rating button altogether. By all means keep the positive rating so that anyone who particularly appreciates a post can plus it. If the post violates guidelines the report button will still be there to use. I've never really seen the point of the negative rating button anyway. If the report button is there that should suffice. Sorry whiteheather - I know this is a bit of a rant but sometimes all the dramatics on here get on my flipping nerves lol. I just wish people would keep a sense of perspective about it all and act like grown-ups.

If your response was a rant them my whole topic was also a rant. You mirrored my feeling exactly. They were the reasons which prompted me to open this discussion. Thanks for your response.

Hi, Ray you couldn't have said it any better than that? Amen to that, but i hope your discussion does'nt get deleted. I don't think anything is wrong with it, but we don't know how Mylot feels about it, I know they don't like neg, talk about them. But you are telling the truth! If it gets deleted so be it, but I totally agree with what you are saying. I even felt bad when my Star went down, oh, what the hell I can change it. I don't even worry about it anymore. have a good week!

Well Marcia it is still there after 4 days so I don't think it will be deleted. Anyway I am not saying anything that myLot admin could disagree with unless they consider not responding or showing any type of emotion at what is happening to the stars as a loss of activity to the site. I understand that activity means money to a website so who knows what myLot admin finds to be wrong.

I carefully choose what discussions I respond to. Most of the discussions I read and respond to are those of my friends. The star rating system needs to be eliminated. I think it is demeaning to those who post good discussions and responses to see their star rating go down. Why not go back to the day when we all were equals.

I never really understood WHY we have that rating...it really doesn't seem to do anything anyway (for me anyway!). It doesn't get rid of those who just want to make other's miserable, so why just have it at all? I'm too busy to worry about my star (which now that you've peaked my interest, I'll have to see what it is!) Thanks for explaining it so even a dummy like me can understand!

You are very welcome. I really do not care about my star or anyone else's but more and more poeple seem to be regarding it as some kind of medal of honor personally I think it is a bunch of crap and myLot is allowing it to happen as it seem to be generating a lot of activity and activity to them means money!.

Wasn't it supposed to eliminate the trolls? I seem to remember this was to benefit us, not make us all neurotic! At this point, to me, it's just there and has absolutely no meaning. Take care of yourself!

I have not seen any discussions originating from the under the bridge gang and if I had I failed to respond. I seldom pay attention to the vagaries of the stars because they are virtually pointless because of the way they can be changed and the way they fluctuate. There really is no way to control the actions of small minded people, so I agree it's best to ignore it.

I totally agree! You are the second person who has written in similar discussion about this and I am in total agreement with you both. I was one of them who wrote about my star rating and was upset about it going from a 10 to a 3 to a 7 and staying at a 7. Now I am not worried about it. I am the same person I have always been with a star or without one. My friends are my friends because they like me. They think I am interesting and most of my friends I have had since Feb of this year when I became an active member and didn't have a star rating. I think the stars should be removed because it is NOTHING BUT A DISRUPTION to new mylotters who don't know what exactly is happening to their pretty blue 10 star. Does anyone know how to submit a request to mylot owners? We should submit the request to have the star rating removed due to immature kids who like to put people down.

well said whiteheather... i never really care son and much about the star ratings here anyway... for me, having fun here and enjoying myself while making friends here is more important rather than star ratings... and i really don't care how many is my star as long as i still get paid from mylot... take care and have a nice day...

I understand what you are saying, but I still felt that something had to be said to these trolls. I believe strongly it has to be these trolls, because I always post quality discussions, I never post ref links, even in my own discussions, and as of late, I have been getting 2-3 best responses a day at least. My star rating doesn't mean a thing to me, if I know that I have done something that may have offended someone else. My gripe with all this is someone is going around ruining the experience of MyLot for myself and others, just because they don't like certain people. As I said in my discussion, these people are cowards trying to run people off of this site, and I am not one to sit idly by and let this continue. I know my discussion didn't do a thing about these trolls, but it helped me to calm my nerves about the situation, and it will help those that are considering quitting because of their star rating. It has already given strength to a few people. I guess we are both fighting the trolls in our own way. Your way is to ignore them, mine to confront them head on and dare them to come out in the open. But we are on the same side. Oh, and if you would like to at least see my discussion (you don't have to respond) here is the link: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1483405.aspx

I have started a discussion on the trolls, but all our friends advice me to just go through with discussions and ignore the star rating. That's what I'm going to do also. Thanks for this post, it gives me motivation to move on. And yes, let's let the trolls where it hurts!
