Fined £75 for being clumsy with a sausage roll!!

Chloe Davies and her sausage roll - Chloe and her sausage roll, which caused the problem
April 25, 2008 9:52am CST
Chloe Davies, 4 was eating a sausage roll while walking through the park with her mum. As she went to take a mouthfull, she dropped a few crumbs on the ground. http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=144554&in_page_id=34 Council 'environmental crime' officers handed teh pair a fine of £75. The mother did mention that the pigeons had helped themselves to the crumbs and flown away. The 20 year old mother lives on £94 a week refused to give her details until she was threatened with arrest in Hull City on Monday. She is going to fight the fine and is prepared to go to court!! Whats your views on this?? Should we pay fines even though the birds/pigeons have had the crumbs?? The girl didnt intend on dropping the crumbs!!

I can appreciate there are bylaws in place that can result in you being fined for dropping or throwing litter, but fining a Mother cos her 4yo dropped crumbs the pigeons grabbed is crazy! Food crumbs are not litter-crisp bags, drink cans, cig packets are litter..if there's nothing left they can produce as evidence they should find somebody else to harass!

I agree with you and hopes that she wins the court case as there is no evidence. Who's to say her daughter actually dropped those crumbs, its not as if they took photos. They could ahve just made the whole thing up to fine someone for a petty offence!! I back the mother 100% and wondering whether to do a petiton on here!????

This is what is happening in Britain these days. It is absolutely shameful. It no longer even surprises me. They should be catching criminals and making the streets safer instead of wasting time on this.

I could understand if it was acrisp packet or something but when it is a couple of crumbs that the birds will munch or get blown away, I dont see the harm in it!!!

I don't think that this woman should be charged with anything, whether the pigeons helped her or not. I understand that littering is a problem, but they knew that this woman didn't intend to litter, heck, she probably wanted those few crumbs that fell out of her mouth. If this was a tissue that she clearly saw fall from her bag, and then kept walking, if she threw a pop can into the bushes, these are causes for a fine, but for a few crumbs to fall out of her mouth, this makes no sense. I hope she fights this to the highest court if necessary, because this is ridiculous. These "environmental crime" officers need to get a life and a real job. Leave this one to someone more mild-mannered and not one to split hairs like this.

Aargh!!! I read the story wrong. I thought it was the mother that dropped the crumbs, it was the little girl?!? Have they not gotten the notice that KIDS ARE MESSY?!? This is retarded!!! And I am with the previous poster that talked about the crisps wrapper. This wasn't something that wasn't biodegradable. This wasn't paper, or plastic, or anything else you would consider traditional litter. These were crumbs of food. The birds got some, maybe a squirrel, and the ants made off with the rest. There was nothing left to clean up. And the mother of the child has to pay however much money that is in American dollars? She shouldn't have to pay one red cent in fines.

Yeah it was the 4 year old that dropped the crumbs!! people in the UK are bored so they just fine anyone and everyone except those that are actually littering!! £75 is $150, and the mother living off £94 works out to be $188. Double the amount in GBP and you have the amount in USD.
