i always think girlfriend is a general call for a female friend.so when sb ask me ,"would you like to be my boyfriend?"i always answer "yes,i will."but i mean only friend.i don't mean that kind of girl friend concerning love.so when a foreign friend asked me the same question several days ago,i still gave the same answer.but he think girlfriend should be the friend he will fall in love with.so i will ask this question "what does on earth the girlfroend mean?

Ple with different culture backgrounds will define girlfriend differently.. It's hard to say but majority of the ple will refer girlfriend to those they love ^_^

I agree with the friend of yours, who says that a girlfriend is someone that you will fall in love with. I never call someone my girlfriend if I do not have the least possibility of falling in love with. She will be just a friend, or a good friend, if it is impossible for me or us to fall in love with each other. That is my humble understanding to the definition of the girlfriend. Thanks for your topic, downaalice.

You are definitely right about your explanation. I have the same view just like you. The problem with many is that they associate it with a kind of a special relationship called love. So you are not alone. Let it be that way as we interpret from the word itself.
