We grew lots of watermelons growing up but I'm not really a gardener, although I am trying. I do recall that the year we had the best watermelons we grew them in an area that was low lying and stayed wet. I have got some watermelon seed to plant too. Watermelon is my favorite fruit so I hope to grown some. I don't know how it will grow in the area I am planning on planting it though. I have planted cherry tomatoes and cayenne peppers in containers. The tomatoes look good but the peppers haven't come up yet.

My green thumb extends only to my house plants. I have some success with flowers in my yard but not much with fruits and veggies. I agree with a previous poster about Miracle Grow. Good luck with the watermelons. Let's have a huge myLot watermelon party at your place this summer? yes????????

You are a very brave woman both because you are pregnant and for trying gardening me personaly you see dont go well together in fact if you mention my name and gardening in the same sentence its probably because I have stuffed something up. If its your first year dont go overboard with it. You have to see what your soil is right for. Plant a bit of everything. Try fresh manure instead of chemicals its much better and you should have seen our tomatoes this year (that was my husbands doing I had nothing to do with that apart from ocasional watering)

thanks for the best responce. By the way do you have the following thing in America: here in Australia we can take a sample of our soil to a plants nursery thing and they do testing on it and tell you the acidity level in it and tell you what you can plant that will grow in that condition or how to make it better so you can plant other things.

Make sure your soil is warm enough before you plant your seeds directly. Watermelon is definitely a warm weather crop. Like all melons, they need to be planted in a mound so that they don't sit in soil that's too moist. If you build up the dirt and plant right in the middle of the mound, water will drain down and it won't be sitting in the wet and spoil. They need to be watered often, but can't be left sitting in it. Like all melons/gourds, the plants will spread out instead of up, so make sure you have plenty of room. They will need natural pollination (normally bees), or you can pollinate them yourself if you don't have any bees that frequent your area. The male and female flowers are easy to tell apart (the female will have a large seed type thing at the base, almost like a tiny watermelon), so you can take a q-tip or tiny paint brush and dip into the male flower and transfer to the female. You can do the same with squash and cucumber. Your Dad probably knows all this. They take quite a while to mature, so be patient!

first of all is to ask yourselves if you have the time and patience to care of them because if you do not but you still want a garden then you have to choose the kind of plants that would suit your lifestyle, like low maintenance plants where you don't have to water them often and it takes minimal time and effort to take care of them. second is to determine if what kinds of plants that needs more sun an which ones that can live longer even with a minimal sunlight. third is to determine their sizes so you can landscape it well. in landscaping , know which one goes with which one so they won't eat each other's nutrient source. happy gardening!

I am not a green thumb either but I have been fairly lucky with flowers and gardening. Some years are better than others though. I like to use miracle grow for my gardening plants. I mix the miracle grow into my soil before planting. Never add miracle grow directly to a plant because the sun will burn your plant up along with the miracle grow mixture. The best time water is early morning or late evening.

Good idea my hubby is adding the new dirt to my garden in layers before I plant so I can add some miracle grow to the layers thanks. Do you just sprinkle it in or mix it with water like the directions?

Not many I am afraid! My Grandad , brother and nephew are all very , very green fingered but I am afraid I have more of a brown thumb than a green one as I tend to kill things off! I think my daughter may have inherited the talent though so I will ask her for some tips for you! lol xxx

watermelon needs to be planted in a 'hill', so make a hill and put your seed or sprout on top, that way the vines will sprawl down. Plant in a very sunny location and maybe use black plastic on the ground to suppress weeds and make it hotter, they love heat. Make your own compost from kitchen scraps, leaves, grass clippings and COFFEE GROUNDS. coffee grounds are a great source of nitrogen. You can also make compost tea by putting a scoop of compost in a jug with some water and letting it sit for a few hours in the sun, then water your plants. I'm new to gardening but I'm trying my hand at eggplant, watermelon, tomatoes, beets, peas, green beans, radishes, strawberries, grapes, broccolini, ground cherry, salad greens, basil, lemongrass, chives, cilantro and various peppers. And rainbow chard. So far everything sprouted and I have lots of stuff to transplant. Have fun with it and let me know how things turn out! Oh, and mulch, mulch, mulch! It will save you time weeding and you don't want weeds competing with your plants!

i would like to make a suggestion if i may. u should pick day of the week just to fertilize the garden. for example, like u can pick monday to be the day for that. u can write it down on the calender, and refer back to it as a reminder. that should help you. thats what i did. it helped me out. have a nice day

it is important to check everyday to make sure that u keep the weeds from around the food you planted. its important to water your garden in the evening when the sun is not up in the heat of the day. never water the garden in the heat of the day. it will kill all the plants. that means the roots of the plants will boil. the plants will die. it is important to fertilizer the garden at least once a week. i recommend using miracle grow, its works better than any other i know. it should come in the green box. follow the instructions, and you will be all set. there is another in pink box, but that is for bushes and roses. dont use that one. i had one too. the stuff in my garden came out good. i was growing tomatoes until after the season was over. what i had left over. i saved for rainy day. hope it works out, have a lovely.

Get yourself a copy of Western Gardening book as its just the best thing for all sorts of gardening questions and you might find one that is used but anyway it is so comprehensive and has allthe different zones in the USA and tells you whatgrows bestin what region and also all otherkinds of information. While it is printed in theWest it has info for all over the US. When I had my own home and gardened a lot I used it all the time. Even new itwas not all that expensive and it does contain so much information its well worth the cost. also make lots of compost for your gardne as it is so good and buy a lot of Miracle Grow too but my advice is Western Gardening book. I wish I could remember the nameof a compound we used to use that made your soil so looce and full of nutrients but the name completely eludes me.We bought it in big sacks and it was so good for some acid loving plants like azaleas and fuchias and camellias too as well as a lotof more common plants.good luck and good gardening.

Become best friends with miracle grow. I should be ashamed that I cant help you out with your watermelon questions as I live in an area where many people grow them, some entire fields dedicated to watermelons....unfortunately I am not one of them. Best of luck with your garden.
