When the ice cream truck rolls through your neighbourhood

What tune does it play? What kind of ice cream treat does this tune inspire you to buy? If you don't have an ice cream truck in your area, what tune would you like to hear, and what kind of treat would you get? Sunday was the first day I'd heard the melodious sounds from the ice cream truck, a sure sign of spring here, even though it was a very chilly weekend. I had to smile, as the tune it was playing was, the theme from The Sting. I must say, it did make me hungry for the ice cream, although I refrained, as it's a bit early for me. The treat that I like to get most often, is a drumstick with lots of nuts. Besides this truck, we also have the carts come around, driven by a kid on bicycle, although I haven't heard or seen those yet this year.

This proves that nobody is too old for the ice cream truck. I'm in my fifties, and I'd do the same thing (if I could.) These are some great memories you have too, of your great grandma, and her house. Thanks for responding.

REally?? You're ice cream truck there have songs in them? but the melody only plays?? The ice cream truck here just play the 'ice cream song' as I call it. It has no lyrics and beats. It only just has a childlike melody. And besides the only ice cream brand that has trucks or pedicabs around here are jsut from Nestle ice cream. The otehr ice cream vendors around here are 'freelancers' or they sell 'dirty ice cream'. Its quite good and really cheap and you just have to wait in your homes when it comes by and then you'll just have to call it and place your order. The only sound that comes from these pedicabs are teh tinkling of the bells. When you can hear the sound of soft bells, you'll know that an ice cream vendor is near.^_^

This is interesting to know. Nestle is a good brand of ice cream. I've never heard of the term 'dirty ice cream' before, so thanks for the information. Our bicycle driven ice cream carts just have the tinkling bells, as well. Take care.

Thanks for the additional info. This 'dirty ice cream' sounds quite yummy. I'd love for you to share photos, or start a discussion when you reach 500 posts. At the rate you're going, you'll be there in no time.

The icecream truck rolls by our house everyday and plays Home on the Range. I have taken my grandbabies to get icecream and given him a hard time about it. He has other tunes, but never plays them. His reasoning is there is a deaf woman who lives in our neighborhood and her DOG knows the tune. The dog lets her know he is coming and she buys it an icecream.

Home on the Range is an interesting choice. Maybe one day he'll try one of these tunes, but having read about the deaf lady and her dog, all I can say is awwwwww, as I find this very touching. These pets are so special. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, that made me quit pestering him about home on the range. It doesn't seem to bother me as much.

there is no ice cream trucks in Montreal, it is not allowed, but there are few kids in the summer that are allowed to have a hotdog or ice cream stand, the stand for ice cream is a cooler bog on a bicycle. they don't have any sound, so since I never heard sounds on an ice cream truck I really would not know what it such play.

I had no idea that ice cream trucks weren't allowed in Montreal. We have an abundance of them in our area of Ontario. Do you mean that this stand with the bicycle just remains in one place, all of the time? The tunes that they play are happy ones, designed to attract customers. Thanks for sharing.

no they are on a bicycle, that is how the kids get around. So they can move their bicycle but they are only allowed in certain parts of the city to do that.

Hi someonesmom! Well in my area we actually had the Mr. Softie Truck rolling around as early as March but only sporatically..those ice cream trucks still aren't in full force yet but it's hard not to hear them. In fact my one friend went out of her mind with the Mr. Softie jingle song and most New Yorkers here concur that the jingle can drive one up the wall after awhile..LOL She has now since moved to Calif. where they don't have Mr. Softie and she is SO happy not to have to listen to the jingle anymore Did you know I was actually able to find a YouTube of the Mr. Softie jingle? Here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKNRG9hIxGQ Here's another one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ2wA1yLsho&feature=related I only once got some ice cream from Mr. Softie a few years ago...they aren't exactly cheap to get...it's actually cheaper just to get a large Eddy's container of ice cream and have that ice cream last a few weeks than the cost of just one ice cream cone

Yes Pye I agree with you there..these individual ice creams are quite pricey and you are better off going to the grocery store! But, It is a nice treat once in a while and I am so glad that we do not have Mr, Softy here! ~Heavens~

Hi pye, Wow, that is insanely annoying. Thanks for letting me get the full impact of it ... I think. No wonder your friend had to 'change coasts' to avoid this. No Mr. Softie here, I'm happy to report. Do they have good ice cream though? I like to get something from our truck/cart once in awhile, as it's hard for me to get to the store. Thanks as always.

darn the icecream truck does not come up this streeet as its too too busy like an arterial highway almost. down town the ice crem truck comes throughthe various neighborhoods and always plays pop goes the weasel over and over and over. would love to hear coming through the rye. that would be so neat a good old irish song.

That's too bad, that you can't have it in your area. We live in a very family oriented neighbourhood, so I believe they do quite a good business. Somebody else here mentioned their truck playing 'Pop Goes the Weasel.' Coming Through the Rye, would sound great too, I think. Thanks for your response.

We just moved from a neighborhood to an apt and my GD loved hearing the ice cream truck. Had 3 come around. They all played the dumbest songs ever - one even played christmas songs off season! But it wasn't the song, it was that it meant the ice cream man was here and out the door we'd run...okay, she ran, I walked! The ice cream was not very good and 75ยข - $1 in price, but it was worth it to be part of the happiness and joy my little GD had and displayed. She just recently told me that she wished we could move back to that house cause she missed the ice cream man and also wanted to take her little cousin to her first ice cream truck... I am still crying on that one!

Christmas songs off season! That's something very special that you've shared with your grand daughter, and will make for such great memories. It's so sweet that she wants to do this for her cousin. I'd be crying too. Thanks for sharing.

I have not seen an ice cream truck in probaly 10 years. My son was still a toddelr the last time I saw one I dont' know what the tune the truck was playing. I don't know what turne I would like ti to play either. I think with the price of gas now those ice cream trucks can't stay in business.

We have an abundance of ice cream trucks and carts in our area. They're very popular here, so I have a feeling that the cost of gas won't affect them any. They do a really big business. Thanks for your response.

Hi weemam, That's okay. I do hope you still allow yourself a treat every now and again. I know that Weight Watchers has their own brand of ice cream products, and they're pretty good. Also, 'over here' we have a chain called 'Dairy Queen.' Their ice cream is called soft serve, and it's actually made with 'ice milk' so it's much lower in fat etc. Thanks for sharing. Take care. xxx

I have not seen nor heard an ice cream truck or cart as of yet in my neighborhood this year! As for the tune they play or the bell they ring that makes no difference to me as it all means there is ice cream and I have seen my husband and I running for these before we married and prior to the birth of our son!! My son has yet to discover these wonderful things exist which is just as well...I'd be penniless! ~Heavens~

Hi heavenschild, I actually have a mental picture of the two of you running after the truck/cart. My daughter used to chase it through our complex, when she was younger. These are some great memories actually. I'm sure one of these days, your son will make this awesome discovery. Thanks for sharing, as always.
