I think silence is golden is more about learning to listen better. When you are silent you are better able to listen to what is being said around you. You are better able to think about what you want to say. So, in keeping with your question, I think I would listen to what I was being charged with and listen to what the officials were saying. I would then proclaim my innocence and request a lawyer. The reason for the lawyer is that I don't trust the law to always do the right thing. ANYTHING can be twisted. So even if you are innocent you should have legal representation. Once the lawyer is requested it is best to remain silent and listen to what is going on around you. Take it all in.
