Know what a rumble seat is?

rumble seat - Cars in the 20's had "back seats" located where trunks are now. Anyone who rode in the rumble seat caught the wind, weather and exhaust from the car. They were popular, though. Photo taken at an antique car show.

A couple of the cars at an antique car show had rumble seats. These were "back" seats that were popular in the 20's. They were where we have the trunks now. My mother used to tell me about how she and daddy would cuddle up in the rumble seat of a friend's car. It was cold and windy, but very private! I doubt if anyone on myLot is old enough to have ridden in a rumble seat. Anyone got any stories about them?

I've never heard of a rumble seat, but they sound like they would have been an interesting place to ride. It would be interesting if I knew someone who had a car old enough to have one, so I'd know what it was like to ride in one of those.

I don't guess any of us will ever know what it was like. Most of the cars that have them are expensive classic antiques that owners display and forbid anyone to touch them! Thanks for the reply.

I've never ridden in one, but I know what they are and have seen them. A nice bit of nostalgia!

I think if the owner hadn't been by his car at the show, I would have climbed in just to see what it was like! Thanks for the reply.

I didn't know what it was until you explained it, but now that you mention it, I have seen old cars with rumble seats. I never gave it much thought that there weren't trunks.

I guess people didn't need trunks too much then. They didn't travel very far from home.

Yeah, if they had traveled much they would have had bugs in their teeth.
