Hitchhikers. Have you, or would you ever pick one up?

After watching movies that show all hitchhikers as serial killers, would you ever trust one? I think sometimes a person needs help but allowing yourself to trust a stranger has long been forgotten.

I've waited for the right opening to interject this, my uncle was beaten and robbed helping someone. It was a bad situation and it scared me to ever pick somebody up.

I don't drive...so never had the opportunity to find out what I'd really do given any situation. One never really knows, espeically a girl out driving on her own who the hitchhiker might be. And even were I to see a woman hitchiking - I've seen enough movies to know there may be a man hiding in the bushes or trees.

Movies always play on our fears. You don't drive? Care to tell the story.

I would only pick up a hitchhiker if it was someone I knew. In some parts of the country, it's very common to hitchhike and a lot of people who do that know each other, so it's not as dangerous. But, I would never pick up a person I didn't know because you just don't know what you're getting into. And, some of them really get belligerent if you don't give them a ride, too. So, you know something's up when they get angry. Just about anyone I've even known who's picked up a stranger has had some weird thing happen to them.

I'm sure. You could start a post asking if anyone has ever picked up a hitcher and what weird things happened.

I have done in the past but only if I had someone else in the car with me and the mobile open to call 999 just in case. These days I wouldn't though as you do hear such horror stories and these days people tend to carry knives and other weapons. It is sad that it has to be this way as I am sure there are many good guys out there who would be genuinely grateful of receiving a lift. I also have hitchhiked many years ago but this is also something I would never dream of doing now. Ellie :D

It is truly a by-gone era. I'm not sure if hitchers carry weapons to protect themselves or to harm, it's a cloudy issue.

as selfish and uncaring as it may sound...i wouldn't pick up a hitchhiker. just to many dangers today. i wouldn't want to put me or anyone else riding with me in danger. of course if i saw someone walking and i knew that person i would pick them up...but never someone i didn't know.

Don't apologize for your feelings, it seems like a lot of people would just keep on driving. It depends though, I have kids so I have to think about them first.

I have picked up a hitchhiker and he was a pretty nice guy he just smelled a little funny but I am a little cautious when it comes to picking the up thou so i guess i would pick anther one up if they really need it i'm a pretty nice guy if I see someone having car trouble I stop to help and if they kill me at least I was doing the right thing and they will pay form their actions when God calls on them to.

I picked up a fellow just 2 days ago... he was walking on the highway in the heat and had 15 miles to walk. He was not hitchhiking, but I asked if he would like an air conditioned ride. I did not know the man, personally - but he does work with my son, so that helped my decision... though my son was not with me. other than that I did pick up a hiker (old man coming from hospital and heading to the next town over (his home town) about a 20 mile hike.

Those horror movies really have a lot to answer for, there are so many things I wouldn't do anymore, and picking up a hitchhiker is one of those things. Actually, that was one of the things I wouldn't have done before seeing the movies! But as you say, it is so hard to trust a stranger nowadays, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Nope will not do that as in picking up a hitch hiker. But I did pick up a very old lady once during a very heavy rain. Poor thing she was walking holding an umbrella but because of the storng wind her umbrella nearly turn upwards and she was struggling with it (noticed all these from the rear mirror). I was stopping at a junction waiting for cars to pass by before I turn right and I said " Lord if she comes knocking at my car door I would pick her up". And she did. She asked me to send her to a bus stop but I took her to the destination she wanted to go and it was church service. Sweet old lady spoke and chat with her in the car. but this was a special case and it was only once. Still see her walking to the bus stop but no instinct to stop and pick her up. As for other hitch hikers - no way...car door is locked and secure. LOL

When it comes to hitchhikers I am not sure what to think,I believe in helping people, but at the same time its hard to tell who really needs help, and who will try to rob you.

Yeah I know what you mean, and that makes it even harder to tell her is good, and who is bad,and especially since the world is becoming a not safe place.

That's a no-no in my country..Either you'll get robbed or killed..not that I'm saying all are killers..But nowadays, you just can't trust strangers..A lot of killings are happening..Like, it doesn't just happen to those picking up hitchhikers. One taxi driver was flagged by a lone woman, after getting to a dimly lit street, was robbed and even took his clothes and taxi..We're just being careful and I guess it's not a bad thing..

I understand, well, I don't really but I understand why you wouldn't pick up a hitcher.

I guess it depends on the location and honestly how the hitchhiker would look. I will also consult my gut to see whether I'm up t giving him/her a lift.

Yes, I have picked up hitchhikers. But that was back in the late 60's and early 70's when the hitchhikers were just people wanting to get from point A to point B. A lot of them were students going to or from college and couldn't afford a bus ticket and didn't own a car. Then there were the ones who were just going across town and needed a ride and more often than not, I knew the person. Today I wouldn't pick one up if they were waving a 500 dollar bill in front of me. Too often we hear of the inherent dangers splashed across the front pages of the newspapers and internet news sites. I don't even go out of my house after dark anymore. And I live in a supposedly nice, quiet neighborhood across the street from a school. And I don't talk to strangers either. The world today is a fearful place to me.

I would only pick up the person if I knew them. I wouldn't be a hichhicker because it's too risky. I guess it depends on your area and if you're trustworthy. I am sure people do it all the time especially truck drivers. However it could be dangerous as you said. Sometimes people take advantage and such. Pablo
