We got our dog from the animal shelter back in 1995 when she was a puppy. We had a neighbor that had a dog for over 20 years that was named muffy that walked the neighborhood. It was small, old and gray and looked like a enlarged rat.

We've had Susie for three years now.She was the pitifulest little thing the first time I saw her.She was tiny and very sick,a stray some friends found on the side of the road. They were on the way to the animal defense league which is just up the street from our shop and stopped by.Love at first sight,I had to have her.Good thing too.I nursed her through the night but she was so sick she could barely breath. We took her to the vet the next morning where she ended up staying a week being treated for all that was wrong with her.Cost us $1,500 to get her well, but worth it.She's the second best dog I've ever owned and a bonified part of the family.;-)

I got my Lab a little over a year ago from a shelter. He is the greatest dog and I hope that he lives for a very long time. I have never known anyone to have a dog over 15 years, but I had a cat for almost 17 years.

I knew somebody who had a dog for over 20 years. It looked like an big rat and was almost grey over its entire body. It was a friendly little dog. Labs are great pets. I remember my Lab and I know your happy with him.

We have had our first dog for two and a half years. It doesn't seem like it has been that long! We adopted her from a shelter. Our puppy, we have had for almost three months now. My time with him has been flying by too and he is getting bigger everyday. We adopted him from a local shelter too.

Its neat how they fully grow so fast compared to humans. Time on average seems to fly these days especially the older you get.

I got my dog from the animal shelter in 2000. He is eight now because he was a puppy then. I hope to have him at least another 7 or 8 years. He is a good dog most of the time.

Thats a good memory you have of your dog running to your high school. I remember a childhood friend of mines dog chasing the bus down the road for quite a distance. He was saying "Go Home Homer"

I got my first dog, Reggie from the SPCA, 8 years ago, and my second dog Mandy, from a breeder, 5 years ago. Reggie is a Golden/Lab mix, and Mandy is a Samoyed.

Golden Labs are wonderful dogs to have. I use to have one when I was a kid and it would play with me in the backyard. It would run down the hill and jump on me knocking me down and start licking my face. I loved the dog which we named Skooter. Its so sad because it got out of the fence and got hit by a car and was paralyzed. We had to have it put to sleep.

We have had our dog since 2000. She is a great dog and we are very lucky to have her. She has a great personality and is very lovable and loyal. We got her from a breeder on a farm

We got our dog, Hobbs, from the aniimal shelter, too. It was 6 years ago and she was laying there with her head down watching people come and go. We went right over to her and she looked so unhappy she was there. The woman there said that she was going to be put to sleep the next day as she had been returned by two kids who had taken her and her family wouldn't let them have her. We couldn't bear to see this adorable, lovable and sad looking puppy (about 2 months)be put to sleep so we got her. She has been by our side every day since then. There has not been a day when one of us hasn't spent most of the day with her. As a result of talking with her and treating her like a member of our family, she has turned out loving and protective, she won't leave our side for anything(unless she sees a squirrel). She trusts us implicitly and allows us to put needed medication down her throat--instinctively knows it is for her good and opens her mouth for the "treatment." Of course, she immediately gets a neat treat right after!

On the 23rd of June this year I will have had my dog for three years. He's an approximately 6-year-old English springer spaniel called Max. I adopted him from a co-worker of my brother who didn't want him any more. She got him from the kennels, and his original owner had not been kind to him :( When I was little we had a dog called Ben but not for very long. I don't even know what breed it was. My mom made us take him back to where we got him from because my brothers and I were too young to look after it and my dad was always at work or in the pub, leaving her to look after it even though it was his idea to get one in the first place. All I remember is playing fetch with him using my Paddington Bear slippers, and crying like a baby when we had to return him. I only have one picture of him, my brother and I are standing in our living room in front of the window, and the dog can be seen outside in the background. It's strange how I still miss him.

I got my dog about 7 years ago just before my 17th birthday. Shes just over 8 now, she did belong to a couple who divorced and the story is she was bought into rescue because neither of them wanted her. Hoever she has had some health issuses so its possible thats why they gave her up. There loss is my gain though!

I have a Jack Russel who is 4 years old His name is Elwood and is an absolute delight. He loves to chase his squeaky ball and loves to go for walks. He is white with brown patches on his body with ears which curl forward over his head - very cute

I wish all dogs lived to that sort of age! That must be like 100 in Human terms! Small dogs do live longer than large dogs so I wasn't surprised you said small and grey! Wonder if it's the same in humans, if so I might just get 'The Royal Telegram' from King William. I've had Willow 12 months and she's a very different animal from the thin, weak over-bred 3 year old we rescued from a puppy-farm! She's a gorgeous well built German Shepherd now who I hope will still be around another 8 years or so! They only live 10-12 years unfortunately. The animal I've had the longest is my 17 year old cat. Rescued as a kitten and still very active. Hopefully he'll still be around another few years yet! The longest we've had a dog from puppyhood to old age for is 12 years. He was a Lurcher and still quite active for an old man! The longest for a Cat in the past was 18, and his birthday is in June, so I'm sure he'll top that! What breed is your girl? Is she a dignified old lady, like one Pom I know, or is she still behaving like the tearaway she was at 2 like my sisters 14 year old one?

For about 5-6 years already. We have three dogs and we love them all. All Japanese Spitz and they are really sweet aside from being noisy and jealous sometimes.
