I was driving one day & my cell. phone rang... I answer it & said, "Hello?" Next thing I hear on the other side was, "Who's this?" So I told him, "Call me back when you know who you're calling..." & hung up... Funny thing is, same person calls me back & says, "why you gotta be like that, dude...?" So I said, "Who is this?" Guy goes, "Is this jason?" I told him, "you got a wrong number... Like I said earlier, know who you're calling before asking, 'who's this?'... Matter in fact, it would be nice if you said who you were looking for before start saying, 'who this?'" Then I hung up again... Does something like this ever happen to you? What did you do? Do you ever feel like saying, "you called me, who's this?"?

I have friends who call back strange numbers that show up on their phone to find out who called. I don't call those numbers, because if someone is looking for me, but I never gave them my number, I'm not going to verify their fishing for information by my calling them back. Does any of that make sense to you? I'm somewhat of the paranoid type. I'm very careful with my cell.

Ones I call back to find out who it was that trying to call me, I usually say, "Hi, my name is ... This number showed up on my caller id... Did you or someone from your end try to call me?" One time, a girl actually told me, "Oh, I'm sorry... I realized I had a wrong number & hung up... I do apologize... It won't happen again..." It kindda made me feel bad for calling back... I told her, "No, no... It's ok... Things happen... I just wanted to make sure it wasn't someone I know calling me from pay phone or someone else's house... No big deal..." Then she went on to say "Thanks... It's good that you're nice about it... One time I made a wrong call, person on the other side was nasty about it... Thanks for understanding..." I mean, she was really, really had a nice & kind tone to her voice...

That is a pain in the but but that is just like when you have an number in your caller id and you call the number back and they called the wrong number. The who is this is the first thing that you get. I think that is something that happens all of the time the wrong number dialed either on the cell or a land line.

Ha, ha, ha... Yeah... Some people are natual born buttheads... You're not going to get an argument out of me on that point... And believe me, there are times I have lost my tempers... I'm hardly an angel... But if it sounds like an honest mistake then I try to remember that I could easily make one as well & be nice about it...

I understand things happen & sometimes we make mistakes but I really hate it when people are rude about it... I agree with you, usually "Who's this?" is the first thing you get on then phone when it's wrong number...

Here's what you do... If something like that happens again, person on the other side doesn't understand you & keeps going, I'd pick up a book & start reading it from the page 1 & keep going until THEY hang up... Better yet, put the phone down near you, don't hang up, pick up a news paper & just keep reading it loud enough for them to hear it... See how long they last... I've never really heard somebody going off in Spanish...

That has happened to me.. I said "if you don't know, then you have the wrong number" Other times someone has called me and said.. is this Bob, I'll say "no is this Jack?" Its fun to mess with people when they don't know who they've called

I should try that more often, mess with people's head when it's an obvious wrong call... "Hello?" / "Who's this?" / "My name is Jack... I'm the one who's filling in for the undertaker "Bill"... Are you the one who's responsible for the cleaning the corps?"

LOL, that is very unethical as fas as telephone manners is concern!LOL, Good thing, you were able to handle it in a subtle way because I know others will start naming bad words when that happen..LOL, I haven't experience that since I always ignore numbers which are not registered, I will just wait if the will leave a message in my voicemail!

It has happened to me many times; sometimes, in the wee hours of the morning when I am still enjoying my early morning dreams. I answer the phone and a stranger wants to know who I am. I admit it is annoying, but I try to be as polite as possible and say, "Who do you want?" I hear another strange name before I politely inform them that they have got the wrong number. Eight times out of ten, they don't want to believe me. But, then they have to believe me. All very annoying of course. But I guess we have to put up with all these things!! Cheers and happy mylotting!

As a matter of fact, this happened to me a few nights ago. I answered hello. My phone happened to be on speaker. So my husband heard it as well. The person on the other end said "who is this?" I said you called me who is this? They said,"I must have the wrong number." and hung up. Guess some people don't use polite phone manners.

I think in our fast paced world phone etiquette has all but disappeared. Gone are the days when people would announce themselves. Anyway enough gripping for the moment. I often get calls like that. We just got a new phone number and they come in all the time. I do like your response and will use it from now on.

I agree with you... It's one thing to be like that when you know the person on the other end, but if I'm calling someone & don't recongnize the voice, I always say, "Hi, this is ****. Can I speak to ____?" You never know who's gonna answer the phone even when you have the right number, especially if you're calling someone's house...

Sometimes I do say "you called me, who's this?" But, is the guy obviously called the wrong number. Either he thought he was calling someone else and was shocked to hear an unrecognizable voice, or he thought he was calling back a missed call on his phone and misdialed (in this case he's just trying to figure out who called him). I understand both situations, but I probably wouldn't reveal my identity to the caller - just tell him that he has the wrong number. He could've also saw your number on his girlfriends phone and was wondering why the he** you were calling his sweetie.

His girl-friend's phone? Ha ha ha... I know what you mean but if he didn't recognize my voice, in my opinion, he should've said, "ummm... I'm looking for such & such... could I talk to him/her?" Or "I'm sorry... I thought I was calling ****... My name's such & such, who is this?" That would've been nice...

Ahh... There IS still hope... I'm glad to hear some people still have some common sense... That's all I ask, if you don't recognize the voice of the person that picks up the phone, then just ask to speak to the person you're trying to call, not "Who's this?"... I understand when, especially calling people at their home, there are more than 1 person who could be picking up the phone... I could be out with my girl-friend & I leave my cell. phone on a table & goto the bathroom... If any friend of mine calls my phone & she picks it up, they don't go, "who's this?"... One of them actually said right away, "Oh, I'm sorry, I think I got the wrong number..." My girl-friend actually went ahead & said, "are you looking for (me).. I'm his girl-friend, we're at the restaurant & he's in the bathroom"... It was nice of her to answer my phone but the point here is, buddy of mine actually understood the whole concept of, "if you don't recognize the voice on the other side of the phone, then say something other than just - Who's This? -" By the way, thank you for sharing your story, lingli_78...

most of the time. and sometimes when i am really busy then i have to stop what i am doing just to get that cal then the person on the other line is going to ask who's this arggg. not owrth of my time. but still there are callers who always to that. for its like this whether you are so sure of the person you are calling dont ask who is this. ask the person if he/she is the one you would like to talk to than asking who is this.

It happened to me many times and this is really irritating. You're right, my reply would always be "you called me then you're asking me who's this?" and the irony of it he would insist "I said who is this?". As if he owns my phone and wondered who answered it. Then and again if you didn't hung up, arguments followed and they're the one who will call you rude, gosh! Why are some people can't be polite?

It's beyond politeness, just plain idiotic... You're absolutely right... They're the ones calling you & they demand on you answering them first... And then to turn around & call you rude because their first question off the bat was, "who's this?"

Yea, I got that before. I usually answer and I get someone asking me who they are speaking with. I end up asking them, who would you like to speak to? Sometimes the person may answer right away with a name and i would proceed to tell them they have the wrong number or some people are just hard-headed and keep insisting that they know who they are speaking to even though they are the one who called. I hate those.

I hate that too... Sometimes I just wanna give a phrase, "reach out & touch someone!" a whole new meaning... Only if it was possible for me to reach over the phone & just... Well... Since it's not possible, but just a thought...

things like this have happened to me too. bottom line is that some people are never taught proper phone ettiquette (not sure i spelled that right), anyway, it is rude to ask "who is this" when you are the one who made the call in the first place.

Interesting comeback. I have to remember that. We once had a message on our answering machine where a little child left a message inquiring rather upset what we are doing at his parents house when his parents should be there, lol. We also got a call once from somebody who apparently *69 a caller (this was when this first came out). This was probably a college girl as we were living in a college town and were students ourselves. With a really upset voice she asked us why we called and hung up right away when she answered the phone. I told her we didn't. She said she *69 us. I said, well then they gave you the wrong number. She said, no they dialed it for her. I said, well then they had the wrong number, nobody dialed from this phone. She wouldn't believe me and insisted somebody did. I finally said, "Listen, nobody called from this phone, I sat next to it studying all afternoon. There is nobody else here, which is probably something I shouldn't have told you because you seem to be one of those lunatics who may just want to have that information to come over and rob me. If not, then find something better to do with your life than wasting money on the fee it costs to *69 a call." "There is a fee?" and she hung up lol.

LOL... Well... Child is one thing... I'm not trying to bad mouth a child but depends on how old they are, they just don't know better... What I'm saying is people who has more brain power then a can of tomato soup should know better than to call someone & say, "Who's This?"... Granted that sometimes when people do call their buddy in a light hearted joking manner & don't realize they've got a wrong number... I'm talking about the people who honestly believe that I owe them an answer because they don't know my voice when THEY called me? It is funny about that lady, though...
