Do You Think Teachers Deserve More Money?

It is a sad fact that teachers in our country are grossly underpaid. They are required to spend their own money on school supplies, but most can't even afford to have a single income and raise a family. Yet, we have millions of dollars to spend on a Mars Rover that malfunctions. Do you think teachers are underpaid?

I agree that teachers are way under paid. I would never want that job. My son goes to a special school that limits class size to 22 children for 2 teachers, but the average class size is 15. I just couldn't be trapped with all those children for that little bit of money. The really sad thing is that pre-school teachers that are in fact teachers licensed by the state in which they teach make just above minimum wage. That is sad!

Please don't take offense to this, but your attitude is exactly why teachers are not respected. Teachers are not trapped. We teach because we truly love what we do. If you think teachers deserve more money, you need to contact your local representatives and demand that they appropriate more money for educator salaries. Not just "education", but specifically salaries.

None taken. I wasn't insulting anyone when I said trapped. I can't go to the local school board because the local school board doesn't run the school my children attend. My children go to a school for kids with ADHD and Autism. I have worked in education just not as a teacher, and I have dealt a lot with sped and sped teachers and when little "johnny" is over there having a melt down and "sammy" is sitting in the corner rocking to calm himself down, and "Sally" is standing on the chair doing this and all the other things that go on in a classroom, the teacher cannot simply get up and go home for the day. I on the other hand when I was in corporate America could say hey boss I'm having a crappy day and I am going home. No one suffered when I left. You as a teacher do not have that option. I commend all of the teachers no matter where you teach. I have 2 sisters that are teachers and with my administrative experience in education I completely agree you are underpaid!

I am from India and here in India education is a state (provincial) matter and hence pay structure of teachers deffer from state to state. Our state is Kerala in south India. Here we have mainly three types of schools. There are Government owned and operated schools, schools owned by private managements but aided by government and schools owned and operated by private agencies without any aid from the government. Teachers and other staff of the first two sets of schools are paid by the government, whereas in the third set of schools they are paid by the respective managements. While comparing with the other sectors of employees of the government teachers are paid in accordance. But we cannot say that they are adequately paid. Their pay structure has to be enhanced. But the pay being offered in most of the private schools are very low, even ridiculous. The only motive of the managements is to make as much money as they can out of the students. In my opinion teachers are to be paid decently so as to enable them to lead a life suitable for the noble work they do.

Yes, I believe that teachers from all over the word are underpaid. They deserve to have a higher salary than the other professionals because without them people will never have the starting point for their good future and careers.

I am living in a different country and I am experiencing the same thing as you do. We are really underpaid, in fact, we belong to the group with the smallest wages. We have to buy materials on our own and we don't also have computers (on one is to one basis) yet in public schools. I am really having a difficult time when it comes to financial stability but when I meet my students and found out that they learned, I just forget all those problems about lacks of money. It is a very tiring job but rewarding nonetheless!

Of course they do.Theirs is a very noble profession.Teaching is not a thing that can be brushed off as basic.Even a teacher who teaches kintergarden kids is someone who is acting as a friend, philosopher and guide to put it in perspective.I have seen teachers in my school and the dedication and excitement with which they do their job was amazing. They would take pains to make us understand certain things and were hardworking. For the kind of work they do I feel what they get paid is peanuts. In Institutes of repute in our country too there are professors whoc teach their students who after graduating go and join the industry which is ever ready to lap them up paying these students much much more than the professors.Yet these teachers stay put for the Love and Passion of their job.True teachers may not expect any higher remuneration and would be satisfied with the gratitude that their students show.So it the responsibility of the Government or any other Governing body to see to it that they are paid what they deserve.

I definitely agree with you and to the other respondents that TEACHERS ARE SEVERELY UNDERPAID. Teachers in private schools are luckier than those in public schools. The teachers in public schools need to be more creative and resourceful to be able to maintain a good quality of education they need to. There are teachers who would sell things to the students just to earn extra. I pity them but they need to. I experienced this myself. My teacher before would ask us to buy the food she made at home and she'll give us extra credit. I pity the act but the situation calls it. I didn't want to be a teacher, as I took Physical Therapy in college, but teachers run in the family. Its like a calling in my part. I can work in a clinic or hospital but I am happier in the classroom. Teaching is a passion for me. It is the interaction with young curious minds that interests me most. I don't care if I have to give extra time to my students as long as they are using their brains. I am fascinated by how the brain works, so if I will be able to train these students to be quick and intelligent its like I am working in hospitals too. I get result through their success in studies. Their knoweldge is power. I really hope teachers would be paid well. And for all teachers, eventhough you are underpaid, do your job well...you have decided to teach. Teachers...without you there will be no president!

Teachers are highly underpaid. Every successful businessman, lawyer, doctor, nurse, etc. had to attend elementary school. Teachers supply our society with future professionals, employees, and citizens. They should be recognized for their efforts by not having to live in abject poverty.

Two words: SEVERELY UNDERPAID!! I am a teacher and that's one of the most recurring subjects that we talk about at lunch. I wonder why it is that doctors, lawyers, contractors, etc. get paid so much when the ones who actually TAUGHT them to read, calculate, spell, use correct grammar, dream big were their TEACHERS?! Thank goodness that my husband works or I'd never make it on my salary and have a daughter at the same time!
