Do you know what happens to checks that you bring in to the bank?

When we all bring checks in to get cashed, do you ever wonder what happens to them? The bank clerks take them, but where do they put all these checks at, when they are cashed? I know that they use a drawer to put it in.. But once they have tallied up all of the checks, where do all of them go?

For what I know the checks will sent to the main office of the bank and they will if the account holder of the check has a fund. If there's a fund they will collect that fund to the issuing bank (but if there's no fund the check will bounce and return to the depositor.) after that they will set a clearing date and after it has been cleared it will be returned to the account holder or to the person who issues that check attached to their bank statements. That's what I noticed here in our company since I was holding all the check here.

Hi! Your reply pertains to cheques issued and sent in clearing for collection.

they usually send them back to the writer after a time, cancelled as cashed.i imagine they keep them in the vault for awhile,or they'd be all over the front area.

All our issued checks are mailed back to us by our bank. So I presume all other checks are mailed back to their respective owners. My wife do the accounting and once they are all tallied she keep it in a box until such time that they are good for shredding.

It used to be the checks were mailed back to the person holding the account but I don't thin any bank no longer does this. The banks copy your checks and send you a copy then I think the checks are kept at a bank vault for safe keeping.

If you are talking about cash cheques only, here is the answer. Once tallied, as you said, for the day, chqs are taken by attender/sub-staff at the bank, and sorted type wise viz. savings, current, overdraft etc. then bundled, numbered and kept as a single voucher bundle at a secure place inside the bank branch! After sometime, when the space is not enough, they are transferred to separate godowns manned by the bank! This is usual practice, with some deviations here and there.
