I have only been keeping cats for a couple of years and i was wondering does anyone really know why we call cats "moggies". Looking forward to some interesting replies

I must have lead a sheltered life as I have never heard of the word moggie before or a cat being called one. I see the post about says it is short for mongral I have never heard a cat called one of those either I have heard dogs called that before though.

I have never heard of them called Moggies. I shall have to read the rest of the responses to see if this is a common word for cats.

I know this is an English term for cats, I don't know why, I'm in the back water of Texas.

It's a term used in Great Britian to discribe a nonpedigree cat. Maybe like we call a mixed breed dog a mutt, a mixed breed cat is called a moggie?
