Stupid payments!!! How annoying!!!

June 6, 2008 2:51pm CST
There are frequent customers who come in and will buy one or two items which may cost about £1 and they will either pay with a £20 note (with no apology, saying they have nothing less) or use their debit card!!??! This is annoying when they come in first thing in the mornign and have no notes to give in return and they then complain about the change!!! Its not really annoying when hey use a debit card but it seems pointless!! Soemtimes they will ask for cashback to make it to £5!! Is it just me being petty or do other people think its pointless aswell??

I am not really sure that I know what to say to you here as I am afraid that I am one of those annoying customers that does that! Reason being is that first thing of a morning, especially if it is a monday I go to the bank for some money and then I go around the shops, of course the bank only dishes out £20 or £10 so I never have any change at all on a Monday, I never complain about my change though I am only too happy to get some change.

Yeah but do you only buy one or two items or are you just buying them so you have change??? Surely you dont spend like 89p and pay with a £10 or £20???

I do not just buy things to get the change, that annoys me I must admit when people do that. I am intending to buy something but I do just go in a shop and buy what I want and if they are only low priced items or one thing or two then I cannot help it! I do not do it on purpose though and I sometimes I will ask first before I buy just in case they have no change.

I don't like paying for a £1 item with any note higher than a fiver Cinders. But occasionally you have no choice. I confess that I see a supermarket as a good place to change a high denomination note as they usually have change. That said, I also try to give the exact money in change if I can as I know that they quite often like that too. I'd never use my debit or credit card for a small value purchase unless I had no cash on me at all. Then my purchase would have to be a desperate one (two loo rolls. LOL). I don't think that you are being petty, and I can see that it can be a pain sometimes. I'll try to do better. [Hangs head].

Its not bad when its a fiver but first thing in the mornign with a ten or twenty is a pain especially when I have no notes, just bags of change. If they are lucky they might get loads of £2 coins!! Its not too bad when I work at the other store as there float is more than ours and they seem to have loads of fivers!!! Also when they ask for cash back first thing when I have nothing and then they get stroppy as I cant give them any money!! Its always the same customers and you can almost predict what they will buy!!! lol

Well if you only have a £20 note what else are you supposed to do? I suppose I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who does that fairly frequently on my way to work. I do usually apologise even though I don't feel obliged to do so because after all, even if it is just a small amount the shop is still getting my custom. It's really up to the shop owner to make sure there is enough of a float in the till first thing in the morning, particularly if it's a recurring "problem". Having said that though I don't complain about being given a lot of change. Money is money as far as I'm concerned - it all gets spent just as easily!

I dont mind when the customer apologises but my point was when they pay with a large amount first thing and complain when you give them loads of £1 coins as you dont have any £5 notes!! Sometimes they turn round and ask if you have a £5 note!!?? I would have given it to them if I did!! Yeah its alright saying have enough of a float, we have £200 float which has to provide change and cash back for those who pay with their debit cards, though I always explain to them that I dont have alot of cash instead of offering cashback. The customers are polite and say it doesnt matter or ask if I can spare £5 or £10!! I appreciate your point but if you dont mind all the change, thats great but others do!! Thank you for your comment x

It's even more annoying when you can see in their purse/wallet that they have the exact change. Sometimes I'll have to change a £20 for something as cheap as £1, but I always apologies, cos I get annoyed with myself for having to do it, seen as it annoys me when others do it to me. Debit Cards don't bother me that much unless someone comes in first thing in the morning and asks for £50 Cashback, cos that's usually all the notes I have, (and there are about 6 banks, 5 minutes away from where I work where they have plenty of Cash) then I have to give anyone else loads of change.

I try not to offer cash back when I first start in the mornings but explain to the customer that I would offer cash back but have just started so havent got alot or any!! I find they are polite and say it doesnt matter or ask for £10!!

I think you should try putting yourself in their shoes - perhaps for a hundred different reasons they don't have a smaller note - perhaps the store should ensure that there are some notes in the till at the start of the day, how do you know they haven't used all their change giving their kids dinner money or that they are using their debit card for something that is really cheap cos they have had to give the last of their ready cash to their children or their partners? I don't mean that to sound harsh but I do think that stores should preempt such problems by ensuring you have a float in your til that covers the possibility that people only have larger banknotes in their purse or wallet! xxx

Don't get me wrong honey i can understand why it frustrates you but I can also understand that they think it is a service that is offered by the store and the store should make sure you have enough notes to honour that no matter what time it is! I guess I am one of those annoying people as I very rarely have money in my purse cos the kids always empty it so quickly! Most times I will end up paying for things (yep even something at 99p with a card or the £20 note the bank machine has just given me - it usually refuses to give you anything smaller - and it doesn't say sorry to us! lol xxx

Alright fair enough, but they dont say 'sorry I dont have anything less'!! Sometimes people have a £10 and a £20 but they still choose to use the larger amount!! We have £200 float so being able to have enough notes to change those large notes is hard especially when some customers ask for cash back first thing!! When I work at the larger store down the road from ours, its better as they have £300 float so have more notes in there tills!!

That's a very natural reaction to a start of bad morning without change. I'll also get annoyed like you if they give me large bills in the morning. It's better if you put a note besides you that small bill or exact bill only in the morning. This will get through after a while. I don't think people knows about and so they don't make adjustment about it. Where I live, I commute everyday and the fees are small so you need change to pay eveyday. In the afternoon, it's ok to pay in large bills because most public utility vehicles have now enough cash to make change. In the morning, if you have a large bills make sure you are ready for the inconvenience it will create, so I make sure I have change everyday. Most of the vehicles have postcard reminding passenger to have change in the morning. So I think is not a bad idead for you to post something similar in your place.
