Do you procrastinate?

I am a terrible procrastinator. I used to be all about getting things done in a timely manner. Then a few years ago I became disabled and now I procrastinate over everything. I don't know if it is because I figure I have so much time on my hands that I will do it later when I have nothing to do. Maybe it is because I changed my outlook on life to enjoy things more and worry less. All I know is I don't do today what I can put off until tomorrow...lol. I get the important things done, but the rest can slide. Are you a procrastinator? How often do you put things off? What kinds of things do you put off? Why do you put things off?

I wouldn't call it procrastinating if you are physically unable to do something, or only able to do part of something. I say this in my own defense! LOL I was diagnosed in 2002 with fibromyalgia and only last year with lupus. I hurt. A lot. Some days are worse than others. When I have a "not so bad day" I will take care of as much as I can of what really needs to be done, like laundry, cleaning out the fridge, dusting, whatever is urgent at the moment. I usually have to rest a lot while doing anything, so I get as early a start on it (whatever "it" happens to be) as I can so I can rest and get back to it. I learned a long time ago to "not sweat the little things". My house definitely has that "lived in" look about it. What I don't usually tell anyone, and shhhhhh! this is a secret... don't tell! is that the rest of that phrase is "by a bunch of pigs". Nah, it's not that bad. I keep it clean so the health department won't tear the place down, and I keep it tidy enough so that we always have a pathway between the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Nah, I'm exaggerating again. My house is not the neatest; a neat freak would have a cow in my house! But it's liveable. No one who visits ever makes those funny faces... you know the kind. Have a great day... tomorrow! Just kidding... don't put THAT off!

I wouldn't call that procrastination either. There is a big difference between making excuses and being unable to do something. If anything you make the rest of us look bad...lol.

I know exactly how you feel. I have fibromyalgia and some other conditions. I always seem to do too much on my "good" days and then pay for it for a week afterwards. Take my rafting adventure, I'm already hurting pretty bad from the little rowing I did today. Plus, I got a headache from wearing my cap and ponytail. Happens every time, but I refuse to give up everything I enjoy to this disease!

I do exactly the same thing... way too much on my better days. But you just never know what the next day will bring. I get headaches from wearing a cap and ponytail, too! Small world, huh? I think the key to living with these types of diseases is to not stop doing what you enjoy, but not going overboard, either. We have to learn to live around it. I'm a passionate gardener. I used to spend hours on end in the garden. Now, the most I can do is maybe plant a few veggies before needing a rest, or pulling a few bunches of weeds. But when I look at what I've done already, I'm amazed at the progress I've made! It really adds up as long as it's done in moderation, but persistently. Of course, I don't always take my own advice and end up wishing I hadn't done so much! I guess it's just human nature. Take care and I wish you many more days of "better" than "worse".

I hate to procrastinate, if it needs doing i want to get it done NOW! But in the last few years i have had to try to put some things off in deference to my health, and for a day or two i can (it drives me nuts) but in the end i do it and pay the price over the next few weeks. My husband is the perfect procrastinator he can put anything off until the very last second and it doesn't bother him in the least! Why can't i be like that?

I don't know. I'm not even sure what brought on my own turnabout in thinking. It's a gift and a curse...lol. A gift because it doesn't bother me. A curse because sometimes I get bit in the bum by letting things go.

Acceptance is what would help me. Accepting that i can no longer do everything that i used to do. Hopefully one day i will develop the common sense to do this.

It took me a long time to accept that fact. I have been disabled for about 7 years now and I would say it is only in the past year I have come to really accept it. I still have a hard time with it sometimes. You just have to take it day by day. Good luck.

I think now that I'm older I do tend to procrastinate more. At times when I was younger I, never really thought about a lot of things that I did , but I guess I have changed my outlook on life in many ways.

I was going to write sooner, but I figured I could do it tomorrow. I think I'm one of those "best under pressure" types. I really am much more imaginative, creative, and motivated when I KNOW it has to be done. It sure is nice to know that I'm not alone in this world. Maybe we could all get together and discuss our defect of character. I'll start planning something.....tomorrow. Thanks for the topic.

vicneedscoffee_ I'm with you. I'm not under pressure to take care of the little things in life. Some people think little things build up to big things, but that's okay too. I don't mind having a day or two of straight out running errands and catching up on laundry or whatever. As long as I don't judge myself for not doing things in a timely manner, and I don't, who cares? The system works for me. I also like to think I enjoy more of life instead of always worrying, but maybe not for me. One day I thought "There's a million excuses not to do something, but not one reason why you can't."

I think most of us are making similar considerations because of the price of gas. It's all so bizarre!

Whatever works for you...lol. Not sweating the small stuff does make life easier. Tomorrow I have a ton of errands to run, but with the price of gas I think it's actually better that way. I can go to the city and get it all done at once.

I am one of those persons. I hate it and dont like it but I do procrastinate. My kids keep on talking to me about it. But then when I decide to do something I go right through unless there is a stumbling block in the way. I am hoping to build my dream house, but seems like am not getting anywhere just talk. I am putting up some land for sale, but am just meeting oppositions all the time. I have to put my foot down and say this is it now.enough is enough.

I have days where I am very motivated and wake up ready to take on the world. I get a lot done on these days. Must be my "foot down" days...lol. It can be hard when you're running into obstacles. I hope you get your house! And soon...lol.

i don't like to procrastinate at all... i prefer to do the things that i can do on the day itself and take the burden out of my mind as i know that i will have other things to do everyday... i don't want my job to accumulate... i prefer to do things bit by bit so that i won't be too tired as well... take care and have a nice day...

Good for you. That's a great way to get things done. I actually expected more answers from people that do not procrastinate than those who did. I figured the procrastinators would put off answering until later....lol. I guess the people who don't procrastinate are busy doing things...lol.

vicneedscoffee I have become a procrastinator every since I got retired. I have so much time on my hands that I put off things for a day or two or sometimes' a week. I put off paying my doubleday bookclub bill until my mylot earnings post to my bank account. why I think its all this extra time that is hard to get' used to for one thing.

I would tend to agree with that because the same thing happened to me. Seems the more time I have, the more time I think I have...lol. Then I get busy with one thing and forget the other.

I generally wish to do things systematically, one by one and I'm a little bit too demanding of others too in this matter. But if at any time the planned sequence breaks down and it becomes a little messy, perhaps I fall in a rut and start procrastination. It takes some time come out of the rut breaking from the procrastination cycle.

I think that's a little different though, when there are stumbling blocks. I think everyone goes through that from time to time.

I can say that I procrastinate alot more now than I use to. I have said to my self so many times that I'm going to clean out my closets and drawers and other things for months now and I still have not done it. Maybe because their behind closed doors and I can't see it and will get to it when I can. I know that I shouldn't be this way for when we say we are going to do something and do it right away it gives us a good feeling of accomplishment. I manage to fall of the deep end alot lately when it comes to procrastination and I need to stop being this way.

I don't procrastinate when I'm feeling well. On really bad days I don't get much of anything done, but on good days I want things done right away. I'm also something of a neat freak, so it goes hand and hand. Although, since getting fibromyalgia, the house doesn't stay near as good as it used to. I just can't do it as well anymore. Now my husband is the king of procrastination! He puts everything off until the last minute.

I don't call it procrastination when one has a reason why they can't do something. There is a big difference between waiting until one is able and just putting something off. I have no excuse most times...lol.

I'm pretty good about most things, but one thing I procrastinate about badly is making dental appointments! I put it off until it's absolutely desperate, rather than just going to have checkups every year. Every time I tell myself I'll go next time before it starts aching ... but then I never do. Serves me right when I get stuck over a long weekend with a toothache!

I think the trick is keeping yourself disciplined by keeping a constantly updated list of priorities along with deadlines and ETAs. Having this with you at all times will help you stay on top of your life for most of the time. And remember, sometimes you have to take a breather or two in life..

I used to have great discipline, but I seem to have misplaced it. If you find it will you kindly let me know? I will start a list....tomorrow...lol. Actually what you suggest is a great idea. I do get the important stuff done. It's the not-so-important stuff that kills me.

I do procrastinate. I have tendency to avoid pain and search for pleasure. I hate paperwork, so I postpone it as long as possible. Sooner or later is going to hit me big time, but I am doing it for such long time.... In the other hand, when finally I have it done, it is done well. I am never late with anything but I do everything in the last minute....

I think I am one of the world's worst procrastinators. I used to not be that way, but like you, I have become disabled and so much has happened to me the past couple of years that I just don't seem to care about getting things done anymore. I am fighting for disability and am so frustrated and upset about things that I put off anything that is possible.

I can understand that. It's really hard to focus on things that need to be done when you're fighting something like that. Good luck to you.

I definitely procrastinate. I put things off all the time (seriously, even simple things like going to the bathroom can be done later). I mostly put off things that look like a lot of work, don't give me joy or don't fit in with what I feel like doing right now. I don't know why I put things off, I just do. Just to emphasise how much of a procrastinator I am, I supposed to be: Doing a science project for Tuesday (haven't started) Writing an Afrikaans speech for tomorrow at 07:00 (I have an intro) Studying for the 5 exams I have over the next two weeks, including one tomorrow morning (haven't opened any books) But instead, I'm typing away on mylot :D

Like there is NO tomorrow. I procrastinate with everything, especially work and phone calls. I find that I can't do things until it's the last minute. With school work I could sit down a week ahead of time and...nothing would happen...no ideas...just nothing. I just couldn't force myself to work...and then poof, a day or two before it was due (because I took graphic design I would need extra time to get stuff printed) I would come up with awesome ideas and get everything done. I guess I just work better under pressure or something, even though that makes everything 100x more stressful.
