Parents...have you talked to you teens about driving carefully?

It's that wonderful, horrible time of year when we seem to see an increase in teen fatalities due to car accidents. Blame it on the excitement of school getting out or the freedom that comes with summer and a set of car keys but so many teens die this time of year. We've already had one fatal accident http://www.wnep.com/global/story.asp?s=8445516 and not all the schools have had graduation yet. Most have at least a few days this week to finish up and the our across the border neighbors in NY have a couple weeks left.

My son is only 8 years old, but we already talk about safe driving while we are in the car going somewhere. I figure they is never too young to start pounding safe driving skills into their heads. Maybe the younger the better. You know before they learn to tune out everything you say.

I wonder how many accidents would be avoided if more parents talked to their kids early like you do.. Saying "drive careful" as they walk out the door just isn't good enough.

My girls are grown and my oldest son is only 13 (how did he get that old) so i have a few years left with them, but even now we talk to them (as i did my girls) about safety when they start driving and the consequences if they don't. Hopefully something we say will make an impression and they will be safe drivers.
