Do you hand quilt or machine quilt?

My Momma has hand quilted for years and her quilts are absolutely stunning. However, I have tried hand quilting and it just isn't my thing. I am experimenting with machine quilting now. Even though I agree that hand quilting adds so much character to a quilt, machine quilting is beautiful too. Any thoughts?

I didn't have a walking foot for my machine, so I ordered one and it has made machine quilting much easier! Tips...hmmm..I am a newbie too! However, I did check out several books from the library on machine quilting and they were a great help to me. Best wishes on getting started! Believe me, you might get hooked! Susan

Both ways are lovely ,and effective too,but im like you Mum,im a hand quilter, ive always quilted by hand in the old fashioned way,and I dont work to a pattern,I love to have lots of different colours and see where they all lead to.I have done a few quilts now, including baby quilts and I love doing it,the only thing I find is that its more of a winter hobby,it always seems a bit of a `hot` hobby for the summer months.

Mine are even more simple than that! I machine stitch the pieces and borders and hand tie the layers. I don't even know the first thing about hand quilting and my machine is pretty basic and doesn't do well on thick pieces. I have recently picked up a few vintage hand sewn pieces and they are beautiful though. I can't wait to create a finished product with them.

I have hand quilted the ones that I have done which are few but I have tried to machine quilt one. I know the hand quilting is so special and beautiful but so time consuming. I will have to stick to the machine quilting. Have a blessed day.

My mom use to hand quilt when i was younger. I agree they are stunning. As I got older she moved on to a machine. They still looked great. I tried to hand quilt before but I lost interest. I tried to use the machine, but again I lost interest. I have thought about picking it up again, but my kids keep me busy and i'm afraid it would take me years to finish one quilt. LOL

I did some hand quilting when I was younger but only ever finished one quilt. Now I have a great machine and have been working on quilting again. It's so much faster with a machine and I find it much easier to maintain nice straight lines by machine stitching rather than hand stitching. There are some really easy patterns that make putting together a large beautiful quilt pretty easy. I got through about a third of a quilt in one night.
