Since I have always done a lot of writing, not just recently, I think I have the qualifications of being a writer...I've often heard it said that writers tend to have the worse penmanship going...that's certainly true of me. In fact, my mother used to torment me no end by saying just how lousy my handwriting was, while she had this beautiful flowing kind of penmanship. And truth be told, when I used to write out my stories, by hand, I had to print, and even THEN I couldn't always understand my own friggin handwriting...that's how bad it was and is...but now it's even worse! I used to be a real stickler for writing my stories out by hand...but ever since I've gotten my own computer I have to admit to getting lazy, and now write everything on the computer...even my stories. But now I've noticed my handwriting is really the pits. So just wondering....do you find your handwriting/penmanship has gotten worse ever since you've gotten to rely on the computer more?...do you need an decipherer to understand your own writing? Does your handwriting look like your writing in a foreign language? In plain language....does your handwriting suck?

Pye, I am left-handed by nature, yet as a child in school, I was taught to write right handed or let me say expected to make legible scratch marks with the right hand. I never learned how to write well with either hand so yes, mine sucks.

That's kind of lousy... I mean kind of forcing you to write with you right hand, when you're left handed..sheesh...

My handwriting changes from day to day. Sometimes it's quite neat and lovely, other times it's just a scrawl. Depends on how many neurons are firing at any given moment, I guess.

That happens to me too! Some stuff I have written by hand looks like somebody else wrote it, somebody who was a very clear thinker, with beautiful penmanship revealing an artistic temperment, and other times it looks like an escapee from a loony bin wrote it, or a confused, emotionally repressed child, hehehe.

I decided in 11th grade I couldn't read my handwriting and if I was going to take notes in college, I had to read them. I also learned to take my notes in outline form, worked best for me. Now, tho, my printing has evolved into a form of cursive, (isn't it funny how much like "curse" that word is?) I can still read it, but I know there are those who can't. Oh, I sometimes write my stores by hand and sometimes on the computer, just depends.

Maggiepie says that people that do that can also be really shy, like I used to be. Of course I can't see really small anymore. I know where my (and my brother's) bad handwriting comes from, my dad also had to print to be read. Even his secretary had trouble with his writing. (mind you, dad could type 60 words a minute on an electric typewriter with 2 fingers) It seems about the only thing my sister got from my mom (she got all her looks from dad) was her handwriting. Both of them have/had nice writing. I say had because mom can't write anymore, the strokes have taken that from her.

Hahahaha! That is too funny... my mother has absolutely beautiful handwriting, it flows and all the letters are perfectly formed. And she has criticized mine unmercifully, to the point that I became obsessed with my handwriting and never felt it was good enough, because sure enough my mother would find something wrong with it. I avoid writing anything to her at all anymore just to avoid that trap. But yeah, my handwriting can be pretty undecipherable, I too used to have to print if I wanted to be sure and be able to read it later. The thing is that so often my mind is racing ahead of my hand by light-years, so that leaves my hand always scrambling to catch up. I never thought that I would be able to write with a keyboard. There was something about holding the pen in my hand and moving it across the paper that connected the words to the thoughts and feelings that didn't happen at a keyboard... at a keyboard I would go totally blank. The first time I ever successfully wrote anything with a keyboard was once when I had smoked a little cannabis and was wanting to ramble on to my then boyfriend about my house and the plans I had for it. He was living with me and had an earache or a toothache or something and was too distracted by his pain to share my enthusiasm, so I said phuck it, and decided to take the opportunity to practice moving ideas from my head into the keyboard. That practice session became the piece that got me my column in the local newspaper! I used to write down my dreams when they woke me at night. Hehehe... try reading that handwriting! Written while I was mostly asleep, in the dark because if I turned on a light I would wake up too much and the dream would be gone. I switched over to one of those little hand held voice activated recorders but my sleepy croaky voice mumbling and slurring voice was no more decipherable than my handwriting! Imagine if we were still having to etch everything we wanted to write in stone!

To quote you here...There was something about holding the pen in my hand and moving it across the paper that connected the words to the thoughts and feelings that didn't happen at a keyboard. That used to be my exact thought...even years ago, before I had my computer but did have a typewriter (still have one) I NEVER typed my stories....would write them out first by hand then type...I felt a real connectedness with that pen in my hand and writing on paper...problem was like you some of my ideas would wizz by me so far I couldn't write fast enough and sometimes would lose my train of thought Nope never wrote down dreams...but every once in awhile, I must dream about my stories I'm currently writing, especially when I'm at a "stuck" point...so boom...wake up and scribble the idea in the notebook I have near my bed..and yes, half asleep..99 percent of the time my ideas would be so on the money I would have to edit what I wrote and just add to the story--and if you want to hear something really weird...my handwriting was BETTER when I wrote half asleep...figure that one out

Yeah, when I had a typewriter I would hand write my stuff first, for the emotional connection and then type it up, editing and smoothing it out as I typed. That was a really workable arrangement, but no longer necessary, and it's much faster to type then to handwrite!

My handwriting is simply terrible - such that I sometimes cannot decipher my own writing. Most of the time, when I hand over any written stuff for my staff to type or follow up, I have to either write it out in capitals or go thru the note verbally with them. I simply hate writing by hand.

mine was always bad they could never read it at work, and when I had to do my papers by hand I couldn't read my own work, by the time I got to university I had to get a computer because the professors would not accept hand written papers.

I have tended to geting sloppy when signing something trying to make it look like Doctors hand writting main reason for that no one can forge my name lol other than that I write still fairly well. BUt on her I miss spell words and if going to fast I get extra letters in the words that dont belong there for my fingers tend to hit other keys along with the right ones lol

I personally think Dentists have the worst handwriting! We have a couple dentist clients and I was so glad when they went computerized for thier checkbooks. It was horrible trying to read who they wrote a check to and how much it was for! I've never had great penmanship - my first grade notebook (yes, I still have it) has all these horrible notes from the nuns about my writing. I very rarely write in cursive any more, and my grandmother pointed that out to us a while back. I try to write in cursive when I can, but it's much easier for me to print - and easier to read!

Try doing some crossword puzzles (not on the computer!) and that will help your printing. The only way to help the cursive is to do it. I try, but it's such an effort and I give up.

I too write a LOT in my job..... Literally hundreds of thousands of words a year and all from my computer. I too have noticed a rapid decline in the quality of my penmanship as a result. Even when I sign a credit card receipt I find my signature fast becoming a shadow of its former self! I just have little or no opportunities to use hand writing anymore; and I am sure that this is the same for most of us now! I especially notice the poor quality of my hand writing now when I have to fill out bank transfer forms etc. I have even had to re-do copies because of the ineligibility of what I have written in the sections sometimes. Sad but true and your observation is most definitely relevant to me!

There is a book out about drawing called, "Drawing on the right side of the brain." It has a chapter in it about teaching yourself to improve handwriting, even to customize it! Penmanship is a form of drawing, [so this book teaches] and that all it is comprised of is drawing "lines" in the correct proportion to one another. My handwriting is legible but nothing neat or pretty, and for some odd reason I have a plethora of different "fonts" that I write in... I can quite literally forge my own signature! After reading about penmanship in this book, I started practicing Victorian alphabets, lo and behold I was writing beautifully, only everything took concentration. If I write fast, it's not the same, but if I take my time, it's not half bad :) practice!

Over the years it was always commented to me how beautiful my writing was. I always had a pen in my hand and was always writing. I used to take real pride in my writing. But yes my writing is now terrible it is not as tidy as it used to be that is for sure. I have been doing things by hand recently to try and get it back to being neat and tidy again!

Which reminds me of a funny story. I was an early reader but in 1st grade I came home with a D in reading. My mom, up in arms, went to talk to my teacher. The teacher told her she couldn't tell if I understood what I was reading because she couldn't read my handwriting!

"Use it or lose it", the saying is pretty good. My handwriting used to be good when I was at school. But now it's getting worse and worse. I was depressed when I saw the words that I had written. So I decided to write more. After a few weeks, I had found that my handwriting became better! So I believe, the more you write, the better handwriting you get.

hello pye, cant help but smile while i am reading your discussion coz i am thinking of my man, he writes as if he is a little kid and boy he sometimes dont understand it as well. i used to tease him that he can type 100 character or more in just a minute but it will take him 2-3 minutes to write his full name LOL. i love to write and growing up i used to write stories and compete at school. i also sometimes write at the black board if my teacher is not around. i like my hand writing and i am happy that the computer is not making it worst unlike most who seems to depend on the computer software nowadays. i still try to write by hand once in a while coz i know practice makes perfect haha. anyway, i cant believe that my hubby is not alone i have to tease him again tonight or asked him to write something for me hahaha. good night!

Generally speaking, my handwriting is ok. When I was writing on the board or for someone else to read, I generally printed unless I was specifically asked to write in cursive. The only time you can't read my writing is if I was writing really fast while someone was watching me. I hate people watching me write. But I can definitely say, I prefer to type as opposed to handwriting. I just don't like doing it on this keyboard because it always goes all over the place and I have had to start many posts from scratch because somehow it would close out. Talk to you later.

Yep, mine too has gone decidely downhill recently (well over the last 10 yrs). It is worse when I'm in a hurry then it is just squiggles. I used to do shorthand too but now I can't remember a lot of it so that is fun trying to remember what each squiggle is and sometimes I am way, way out! My BF has wonderful neat writing, typical of an architects style. Very clear, he never rushes it. Me I just dash it all down as I'm running around doing one errand or another. Tee hee. I used to do all my shopping lists on the computer too but I've stopped doing that now. I have to let me fingers do something other than typing (and washing, cleaning, cooking, etc., etc.!) Thanks for sharing this with us.

I think one of the reasons my handwriting sucks especially when I used to handwrite my short stories, is that my thoughts raced along so fast and I wanted to get my ideas on paper before I forgot them...since my handwriting has gotten worse, I no longer trust myself to handwrite my stories anymore and rely on the computer..but then I have to contend with typos..LOL

I'm left-handed since child. I was never corrected because it was said then that it's bad to correct a child because it will affect her thinking. hhmm... Yes, I have a bad script handwriting. My writing is better when I used print style. I'm just starting to make my story right now. I hope to really finish it. I think we should hand write once in while so as to not forgotten it so to speak.
