Getting Reconnected

Looking back, it seems like months ago, but in reality, it's been a little over three weeks since it happened. I'd logged into myLot on the morning of Thursday May 22nd, as is my usual practice. About twenty minutes later, I noticed a strange odour, like something was burning, close at hand. At first I thought it was one of the lawn mowers used by our property management gardeners, as one of the mowers had been left running, and was abandoned out back. Then it became quite evident, that the smell was very close at hand. Before I could collect my thoughts, there was a sound like a poof, and my computer shut off. This was the end of life as I know it until Sunday, when we returned home with our repaired computer, and we were back in business. However, we're still not out of the woods, as our hard drive needs replacing, and hopefully this will be taken care of in July. So, if I disappear again, this will likely be the reason. I have missed all of you tremendously, especially all of my dear friends here, and I hope you all know who you are. I want to say a special thanks to one friend in particular, who was such a big help to me, in letting certain people know what had happened, and in keeping the lines of communication open between some of us. Have you ever been shut out of myLot (and offline) due to trouble with your computer? Did this drive you insane, or were you able to cope with this crisis? What is the longest period of time you've been disconnected?

Hi mummymo, Thanks so much for all of your kind words. I am a bit on edge about my hard drive, and will be until we get it resolved, as our (fabulous) guy who does our repairs, says it won't hold out for too long. I hope you 'stay connected' too. Hugs to you also. xxx

Do you mean you're going from this Saturday the 21st? Have a wonderful holiday, as you and your family deserve it so much. Are you going to the same resort you went to last time? Actually, I'm going to be quite busy from around June 27th for about a week. We're going to my sister's, but I'll try to 'sneak' online a few times. My birthday's on the 27th, and my daughter's is the 28th, then my grandson's the 29th, so it will be hectic, and then we're leaving by late on Sunday, or the Monday, for our week away. Enjoy. xxx

Yipee! I'm so happy to see you here someonesmom. I'm glad that, that "someone" kept me informed of what happened to you..Hey I MISSED you. I missed seeing that cute AnnaBelle avatar of yours and it just hasn't been the same around here without you. On and off I've had to shut down my computer due to all the terrible storms we've had here and didn't want to risk damage to my computer...So would be off-line for several hours. The worse was when the electricians were here in my apt building and switched the electricity off...for about ten hours from very early morning..I went nuts without my computer, so I can imagine how "disconnected" you must have felt these past few weeks...like in limbo, right? Glad you're back!!!!!!!

Hi pye, Awwwwwwwww, thanks so much for the kind words. You are a great friend, and I really missed you too! I kept looking over at the empty space where my computer should be, once it was picked up for repair, and I just couldn't believe it. I think this is the longest time ever for me. That 'someone' we're talking about really was a big help, and read me responses to PM's received on my behalf, over the phone. Thanks for your's, by the way. Another thing that happened, was that our monitor was totally gone, when we came home, as it had been acting up for months. Fortunately, we had one of the older chunkier types sitting here, that had belonged to my nephew, so was able to get that one going. I shut down my computer during thunderstorms too, and have had it go several times today, when the power went out for a brief time. Thanks again for being a great friend, and 'first in' here. You're so right ... I really was in limbo! Take care, and I'll talk with you soon, one way or another. We definitely need to get caught up.

Hi gabs, Thanks so much gabs for the kind words. I'm not exactly sure when we're going to be getting the new hard drive. We're going for a week's vacation at my sister's, and are leaving a week from Sunday or Monday. We 'may' get the hard drive at this time. I'll do my best to 'sneak' online during that week, when the rest of my family is occupied. I have a busy week ahead, as my birthday's on June 27th (wow, you and I are just a week apart), although I know I'm older, and my daughter's is the next day. She'll be 17. Then the day after this, is my grandson's 5th birthday, and my niece's is on June 23rd. My sister's coming out on the evening of my birthday, and will spend the weekend, and join in all of the celebrations for everyone. Then we'll head back to her place, at the beginning of the week. Take care, and thanks so much for sharing here, especially since you really should be resting.

Hi minnie, I can definitely feel your pain too. Even a few days is too long. I think the just over three weeks I was offline, is my longest time ever, and certainly since I joined myLot. I hope things stay up and running for you from now on, and for myself too. I really need my hard drive to hold out for awhile more. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. Two weeks is definitely a long time, and I know what you mean about these type of service people not believing you. It's happened to me before with the phone, etc. I'm glad you were able to have the charges taken off your bill. You enjoy your evening too, and thanks for sharing here.

Hi all! I'm glad this discussion is here. Some people might think it's pathetic to be so stressed and upset about not having the Internet, but it's not always the case. I've had some of my most meaningful discussions with one of my best friends on MySpace, blogs are a great way for you and your friends to keep each other updated on life, right now the majority of my job hunt is being done on the 'Net, and the only way I have to communicate with the guy I have feelings for is online. When the spring semester ended at college, I had to come back to my parents' house, and the only computer in the house that works well and has a Broadband connection didn't have a screenreader on it. But Voc Rehab had previously sent us the installation CD for the screenreader, so here I sit, writing to you now. But I was without the 'Net for a week, and it sucked, very badly. I've had a few problems with this comp, but nothing I can't handle, and I wish the same for all of you. Feel free to drop me a line anytime! Namaste, Becky

I'm glad that you've found this discussion helpful. I find that the people who find it "pathetic" mostly have very little interest in doing anything online. I do much of my business on the internet, as it's hard for me to get around, so it's a really big help to me. I also stay connected to some wonderful friends this way. I hope that your computer stays up and running too now. Thanks for your response.

Glad to have you back, that must of been horrible. I don't know what I would do if I lost my computer for that long. The longest I have been disconnected was during a storm when I turn the computer off. I guess I have been lucky.

Hi OURDEW, Thanks. It really was awful. There was a chance that we'd be without it even longer, as we had a couple of things repaired, and then there was another problem. It still needs more work. I hope you don't have anything like this happen. I too, turn my computer off during a storm, and we've had a lot of those here lately. Take care.

Wow, that is tragic. i would have a hard time coping without my computer for that long of a time. I'm sure I would be going to the library everyday until I could get my service back. It is no fun to be disconnected.

It really was very hard to cope. Not only did I miss my friends, etc., here, but I do a lot of my business transactions online, and even my grocery shopping (for the most part). Thanks for sharing.

We moved from a sub-suburban area to a rural area about 2 years ago and I could not find a company to get me connected. After about SIX MONTHS I found a satellite internet service and got connected. THEN the service went down after 2 months. I called and called and they kept saying there was an equipment shortage. FINALLY 3 months later they came out and repair everything. It was the modem. They eventually refunded some of my money too, because they had been charging me during those 3 months. I felt so isolated that I think I got depressed. I moderate a Yahoo group that is very important to me and I had to assign a co-moderator to help me out. I was out of touch with that group for so long I felt like a stranger when I got back on. I am now happily re-addicted to my computer!

I never even thought of a situation like you've mentioned, as we live in a city. That must've been so frustrating. I'm glad they did the right thing, in giving you a refund. It was hard enough for me being away from myLot, so I can only imagine how you felt away from your group. I'm happy to hear that you got this all sorted out. Thanks for sharing.
