i never could really undeerstand this. so can people actually hear what stewie is saying word for word or do they understand him by his actions and his words just go unnoticed. at times it seems like lois understood what he said but then other times its like stewie cant actually talk and people assume hes meaning what he means

there is manhy instances where it may seem lois understands him but i think its more of a motherly thing then actual understanding cause how often has she down the exact oppisite of what he wants. Brain and other kids his age seem to be about to understand. whats funny is Brian is understood by all and con communicate with all

I think the best explanation is that people DO understand Stewie - he IS speaking english after all - but they just think that it's baby gibberish and ignore him.

I never really understood that either, and I think its supposed to be like that. Because Brian can obviously understand him, other babies understand him, and some extra characters are the same way, but his parents at least don't understand exactly what hes saying or what he's saying at all.

Do you remember the "Petoria" episode? In the final scene they wanted to know if everyone could hear the baby. I'm thinking that it's only the dog who can hear him. Everyone else just pretends like he is speaking and talk back to him. Many moms do that. They pretend the baby is talking. Turns out, they really are!

There are several episodes where it seems like only lois and brian are the only ones who can uderstand him. I can't imagine why they would be the only two, he just dosen't seem to have much interaction with the others as much as he dose with those two.

In my opinion, yes, other besides Brian can hear Stewie. However, I don't think they listen most of the time. Now most of the time the understanding is implied, but I have one example (I have used it here before, but I will again, it's still valid) where it was explicit. It's the episode where they are in the safe room and the robber's are downstairs. The safe room is filling with water and Peter makes a confession. The confession, he did not like "The Godfather". The family argues with him about it and he goes further saying that he could never actually finish the movie. At this point, Stewie says something to the effect of "How can you judge the movie if you've never seen the whole thing." Lois says, "I agree with Stewie." That goes way beyond just understanding what your baby means, and also she assumes that everyone else understands. Over the upcoming days I will look for more explicit examples.
