Why did they kill Nicky?

Nicky - Nicky fromm the series "Heroes". She has multiple personalities that take over when she needs them. They all have different strong and weak points. She is mother to Micah and was wife to DL. She had an affair with Nathan Petrelli.

My brother was devastated when he saw that they actually killed Nicky in Heroes the last episode of Season Two. I can't imagine why they killed her. Is Micah going to live with his aunt? Do you have any ideas as to why they killed Nicky if she was such a popular character?
