Can any USB midi genius out there, please help me solve this mystery? There have been many forums on this particular subject, without any real answer. If additional software is needed, then fine. However, I as well as several other budding musicians cannot seem to resolve this USB issue. The Yamaha manual & their customer support team have been of no help. I am at my wit's end. commanderxo

It says "Computer Connectivity: USB and Flash ROM USB small Computer-Web The PSR-403 comes with 30 built-in songs plus 70 more on an included CD-ROM and an interactive lesson system, divided into left and right hand parts, for learning them. In addition, you have the ability to connect to a computer via USB, download more songs from the Internet into the internal Flash ROM (PC only), and use all of the Yamaha Education Suite features to help you learn to play them. Yamaha makes it easy to get connected with the new PC button. Now, instead of wading through function menus and fighting through a maze of selections, one button is your expressway to music on the web and your computer. In addition, once connected, you can play your songs into the computer (PC and Mac), edit them if necessary, and e-mail them to your friends and family. And with General MIDI (GM) and XGlite compatibility, song data always plays back with the correct sounds." on the website "https://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/ModelSeriesDetail/0,,CNTID%25253D65207%252526CTID%25253D205100,00.html#CompC" and there is a lot more information! I think this is the same model that we have, so let me know if you still need more assistance!

Thank you for your considerate response, olivemai. First, let me give you a little background, before we get into what yamaha.com has to say. I've been playing music since I was 8 years old. That's exactly 48 years now. I've seen all sorts of musical instruments come and go, spent many years in broadcast engineering, have performed on circuit gigs, & recorded. But never in my whole career, have I ever witnessed the worst techno-blend of computer/instrument installation, as with this particular PSR. Yamaha is notorious for writing the poorest manuals on the market...and this one for the E403, is of no exception. If you're not a Yamaha savvy computer geek, then you might consider becoming one of them. Yamaha manuals tell you only so much, and consider that anyone can fill in the blank spaces they've failed to mention. For a beginner, this can cause one to pull their hair out. Trust me! Thank you, but I've read these instructions. If I were you, forget them and seek professional help. Now....I DID manage to get my recorded User Songs into my computer's Cubase sequencer program...but had to have an outside professional set it up. If it is your intention to do the same, then I urge you to listen closely. First, you'll need a 2.0 HIGH SPEED USB cable...NOT the "standard" one that Yamaha suggests in their manual. This keyboard sucks a lot of cpu juice, due to it's huge internal flash memory. Next, connect this "newer" cable to your PC's PLUG & PLAY port. Make sure that the PLUG & PLAY USB device host is turned on. You'll find this listed under Administrative Tool "services" in your Control Panel. Then, download the UPDATED midi driver for this machine from Yamaha, corresponding to your PC's operating system version. Forget the one on the CD-ROM disc they gave you. It's made for the pedisessor PSR-293 model to the PSR-E403. However, you can download the Musicsoft Downloader file. Once that's done, open your sequencer program, and set up your midi input/output to your external device. Set your keyboard's midi settings accordingly. Now, something else that Yahama fails to tell you. PC Mode is strictly & only used, when you want to transfer midi files FROM your PC to the keyboard. Use your Musicsoft Downloader for this. There. Thanks again, and best of luck. Warmest wishes from one musician to the next; commanderxo

Oh well! Maybe that is why my son left the keyboard with us when he moved out! LOL I am still a beginner on this keyboard, thanks for the advice! I think we do have a 2.0 high speed USB cable! I played a very old piano as a child, and only learned keyboard as an adult when I saw a sale about fifteen years ago! This yamaha my son bought last year some time!

User Songs can be transferred to Computer only through the Headphone output jack situated at the rear panel of the instrument (E 403), as audio outputs. Do not expect to get MIDI output from USER SONGS with a view to record notations in any notation software in computer. This is only possible through USB output if you play and record in real time in your notation software program. The USB output always give out MIDI DATA. Hope you are satisfied with my answer.
