My baby had a fever yesterday... and it was such a pain to make her take medicine... a lot was wasted just trying... This has been going on for quite some time now... she doesn't want to take vitamins... she cries and run away from me... it is so frustrating... How can i make a two year old understand that taking medicine when she is sick is good for her... and vitamins will make her body healthier and stronger... Did you experience the same with your kids?... or do we have the same problem?...

My kids are weird, they like taking most syrups. My son, who is on Adderall XR pills, loves taking them. He's already the youngest person I've ever known that can take pills the way they're supposed to be taken (6yrs), and a lot of the time he reminds me that he's supposed to take it. Certain things, like Immodium liquid, they don't like the taste, but I tell them its going to make them feel better, so they go ahead and take it. I've never had too much problem in getting my children to take their medicine.

You are very lucky in that aspect... my baby just hates taking medicine and vitamins... so i need to be creative all the time... right now... instead of using a spoon... i let her play with the medicine drop then give her medicine as if we are just playing a game... thanks for the response...

Yeah. Since I have four kids, this kind of things is very familiar to me. I was observed that if the medicine has a flavor like cherry or oranges, the kids love to drink the medicine or vitamins, but if it is antibiotic or something, then we have also a problem, they don't want to take such medicine. Well we don't have choice but to let them take it in any way, I hold the kids and let their Mom get a dropper to put the medicine or vitamins in their mouth and hold the nose of the kids to let the medicine get in, if you did not hold the nose, then it will be a waste.

Somebody also adviced me to hold the nose of my daughter... but with my situation right now... that is difficult since i don't have anyone to help... my husband is abroad... so there is only the two of us in the apartment... last time it was like a wrestling match between me an my baby... thanks for the response...

Hi aseretdd, why not trying another brand of vitamins that will suit to what your kids like...Like sweet one or the fruity flavor, it works for my close friend since they had that experienced too, to chase the kids or force to feed it to their mouth!

I see....Wow! that would be a good trick, try to invent any game to divert the attention and a game where your baby will open her mouth! LOL!

I can understand how frustrating it is to feed the medicine to a baby. I experienced the same. When my child was so little, sometimes I would hide the medicine to the bread or something like that. Or sometimes fed him by force. Or tried to tell him at least it's better to get an injection. As time goes by, now my child understands he has to take the medicine so that he will feel better when he doesn't feel well. I hope this will help you. I love China

My baby is still too young to understand that medicine will make her feel better... so for now... i try to be very creative... or just use force... which makes her cry a lot... i hope she will soon understand the importance of medicine and vitamins... i will try very hard to explain it to her... thanks for the response...

Pinching the child's nose just to make her take her medicine or vitamins will only add additional trauma to her dislike in taking meds. I suggest that you add the medicine to her juices or food or milk or add a little flavoring or sweetener to the medicine. In my child's case, she dislike iron vitamins a lot so most of the time, I would add it to her glass full of juice so she won't be able to determine or identify the iron-vitamin taste.

I have never added vitamins or medicine to my baby's juice since she rarely finishes a glass in one sitting... she would drink a 200 ml juice in hours interval... so i cannot do that... but i hope she will like the flintstones or gummybears vitamins... that would certainly relieve me of some problems... thanks for the response...

You can add it into a small amount of taste just to deceive your kids tongue.

I don't have kids but I have lived with my sister in the past and she has kids and I was always around them helping her out or just watching her techiques. One thing my sister always makes sure to do is get the medicine that has fruity bubble gummy flavors to them. And when it was prescription medicine that they had to take and they were fighting it, she had not choice but to pinch their nose at times and have someone hold their hands slightly and then they would open their mouths and she would put the medicine in and close their mouths. It was all done as gently as possible and it worked and once it was done her kids made have whined a bit but it was soon forgotten...

Too bad most antibiotics don't come in any fruit flavor... that would have made life a little easier... but my baby still doesn't want any... i just do not know why... so it is a constant battle of wits between the two of us... thanks for the response... welcome to mylot and i hope you enjoy your stay here...

Yeah, I hate medicine too and I'm an adult lol... You may just have to slightly hold her nose and she will open her mouth and put it in there. I know it seems cruel but it won't hurt her and she will get the medicine she needs to get better too... Thanks, I'm really enjoying it a lot :-)

My wife who usually gives the medicines to my son whenever he is sick or in anticipation of the same and she tells him the importance of taking the medicine. My son who dislikes to be ill, immediately takes the medicine or syrup. I have no problem in this front.

I guess your son is old enough to understand the importance... my daughter is only two years old... and it is difficult to explain to her that medicine will make her feel better... it is also a good thing that your wife is quite patient with the matter... thanks for the response...

Fortunately, I never really have so much problem making my little boy take medicines. I choose medicines with tasty flavors so he just swallow them without so much fuss. Ask your pediatrician regarding flavors on different medicines. they usually know which taste good and which taste really horrible.

Well, no matter what the flavour is... she just doesn't like vitamins or medicine... i hope this will change when i introduce to her the flintstones or gummybears vitamins... since taking one is just like eating candy... thanks for the response...

I read one of your repsonses about trying to add the medicine to orange juice or milk which is a very good idea. Another thing you might try is mixing it with applesauce if your daughter likes that or some other type of food that she really likes. That way maybe it will hide the taste of the medicine. When my daughter had heart surgery as a baby I had to give her Lasix and Potassium in liquid form. She would take the Lasix fairly easily the Potassium I had to put in her formula and mix it in and make sure she took all of the formula. I sympathize with you, I know it can be hard sometimes. Good luck!!

It is really very hard... my baby is very picky with food and drinks... so i can't mix the medicine to juice of milk... but i found out that if i mix it with water and put it in dropper... she will easily take it... as if she is just playing... work for now... i don't know next time... thanks for the response...

My kids don't like taking their medicine but I give them two options: 1)you take the medicine, it tastes bad, you drink some water after you take it and the taste goes away after a few seconds or 2) you get really sick and you won't be able to play anymore for a while. They go with option 1, take their medicine with a funny look on their faces, drink some water, and then they go play.

I don't think my baby will understand that because she is only two years old... but maybe when she is older and she still doesn't like taking vitamins and medicine... i will try that method... thanks for the response and welcome to mylot...

As far as vitamins, I would get those chewable Flintstones vitamins that taste better than ordinary ones. Kids like thigns they can chew. If she absolutely won't take them, I am not sure if it's okay to do this or not but you could crush them up and put them in some kind of food she really likes, like maybe apple sauce or something, in such a way that she doesn't even know they are there. Now normally I under no circumstances support tricking children and so I would only use it as a last resort, but it is an option. As far as medication, especially liquid stuff, it often smells bad and so the child will think it tastes as bad as it smells, and usually they are right. So, again if it can be mixed put it in something she likes. If not I am not entirely sure what to tell you.

Oh I understand your frustration completely!! We used to have to actually pin down our children and plug their noses to get them to take their medicine. It was Horrible!! They were both "sickly" children and we tried every kind of bribe and sneaky way to put medicine in food or drinks but they always knew!! I wish I had some answer for you but this one always eluded me. They did grow out of it by the age of 6 and actually they both were able to take pills very early thank goodness. I feel for you. I hope you find some good advice on here from someone! I used to be so jealous of my sister when her kids would drink it right down!!

Thank goodness I don't have a whole lot of problem with this. Our local pharmacy will flavour the childrens' medicine with their favourite taste. If I need antibiotics for them I usually have it flavoured with banana because it is strong enough to cover any medicine taste. Of course, then I have the problem of them wanting more.

I bought a new vitamin for my daughter... i tasted it this morning... and it was quite awful... now i understand why she doesn't like it... such vitamins should be banned from the market... it is quite expensive... so i don't want it to go to waste... so i mixed it with water... and put it in a dropper... that works for now... thanks for the response...

I experienced the same with my son. When he was a baby it was very hard for me to give him vitamins and medicines. Luckily, he don't get sick very often. But if he gets sick, all i can do is cry because i can't make him take his vitamins. I tried mixing it with juices and milk but it failed. Now, he's 22 months old and he's got a nanny. I really don't know what she did but she made it very easy for my son to take vitamins and medicines when he's sick. She would play with him first, put him in the mood then that's it. He would take his vitamins!

You are very lucky to have such an experienced nanny... her method in making your baby take vitamins and medicine is a good one... i also tried that and it works for a while... i let my baby play with the bottle... with my supervision of course... and when she is comfortable enough... she took the medicine... thanks for the response...
