kay I hope most you know what this title actually means. Anyhow I have been a heavy coffee drinker for many many years. I could drink a pot late at night, then lie down and fall asleep easily. recently I have been cutting back my coffee intake. Well for a few days now I drank one or two cups a day only as opposed to the usual few pots I used to drink. Now seems snce cutting back my sleeping patterns are bass ackwards. I can not get to sleep if I don't have more coffee in my body it sems. I stayed up till 5 a.m. 2 days in a row not being able to sleep. Tonight/today I did not sleep at all after having just one cup. Now can coffee do this to a bodys workings or what? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Good Morning Grandpa Bob!! I can't drink much, if any, caffeine after 5:00 in the afternoon or it will keep me awake too. I take medicine that helps me with problems I have with my legs and that medicine makes me sleepy, but if I drink too much caffeiene even that doesn't help a lot of times. My husband and I have both started waking up early every morning, much earlier than we used to. We are both getting close to 50 and I don't know if that has made a difference in our sleeping habits or not LOL!!! Take care and have a great day!! Shelia

Actually, caffeine will act as a mild broncho dilator, and help you breathe easier, GB, It has also been shown that some asthma meds will cause hyperness or wakefulness. On the other hand for kids on rare occasion will get terribly sleepy after taking their asthma meds. Each person is different in their med response.

Morning to you as well. The sun is shining brightly here and it is going to be hot and muggy so the A/C will be on soon I feel. But for now theres a nice cool breeze coming through all the windows. I hate having to take meds even my asthma meds. the ones I take do not affect me at all though as far as sleeping etc but I hate taking them. Boy I sure went way off track here. Anyhow have a great day/evening. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Not only will cutting back my coffee give me insomnia it will also give me a vicious headache. The last time i cut back on coffee i actually added decaf to regular coffee and slowly cut back the regular until i was just drinking the decaf. It took a couple of weeks but i didn't have the miserable side effects from it.

The only reason i ever quit in the first place is that i was pregnant. It would be near impossible for anyone to convince me to give up my pots of coffee a day now.

I definitely know what that term means LOL. I bet coffee works like that on alot of people. Dayquil and Nyquil works like that for some people also. they take the Dayquil and it puts them to sleep but they can also take the Nyquil to help them sleep and it keeps them up.

That does sound strange to me and yes, bass ackwards. Maybe your body is going through withdrawls in a way from not so much caffine and hopefully things will get better soon after your body gets adjusted.

I could do the same thing with coffee or coke. I could drink it late and still fall asleep. It's crazy. I have never tried to cut back but I do have to wonder if it has anything to do with your sleeplessness. It's interesting.

I too am a heavy coffee drinker and I must drink ten plus cups a day, I dread to think what state I would be in if I cut back or stopped! If I go too long without coffee I get a really bad headache. I do not need to stop drinking coffee to be bass ackwards though, that describes me most of the time!

I drink a lot of coffee to. your problem is that you are going through withdrawals. I make 3 pots of coffee a day sometimes 4 pots. 10 cups at a time. Thats with my husband helping me drinking it. If I miss drinking coffee for a day I will get a headache. I need my caffeine. I heard on the new that coffee is good for you.

Hehe...yes, I do know what the title seems to suggest. No doubt your body is going through like a withdrawal kind of thing...you're system has been used to so much coffee for so long, now it's adjusting to the change...perhaps it'll take a good full month or so for your system to get adjuted to such a radical change..uh, either that or go back to drinking all those pots of coffee..hehee

I'm a heavy coffee drinker about 4 to 5 mugs(almost 3 cups) a day. There are time that I would try to cut my coffee intake but I feel very uneasy maybe its my withdrawal symptoms, I don't know. What I would do is take hot chocolate(milo) instead on the same mug. My sleeping pattern is irregular so I cannot correlate it with my drinking coffee or chocolate.

That is really odd. I'm wondering if its a withdrawal symptom. Maybe your not really going to sleep because you didn't drink the coffee, but because you are having caffeine withdrawals. I know when I attempted to quit smoking, I couldn't sleep and I stayed up lots of late nights. I wonder if that is kinda what is happening to you?

Hi Grandpa Bob, Like you I don't care for juices or sodas, so I drink lots of coffee. I have tried to cut back, but my body goes into hysterics. I can't sleep, major headaches and restlessness. So I've decided to tank up on coffee or suffer. I work a rotating shift, so coffee gets me up and puts me to sleep. If I vary too much, don't tank up enough, I know from the major headaches I get. I do drink lots of water too. It is nothing for me to go 24 hours on a regular basis, before I do sleep. I know that is not necessarily good for one, but one does what one has to do. So get regulated and keep your caffeine level up there or know the consequences. LOL Your body will tell you...

I am like you. I can consume caffeine all day and go right to sleep. If I do not have my caffeine I get a headache and that would prevent me from sleeping well. My secret is to keep myself full of caffeine.

how odd but I was never a heavy coffee drinker. however my husband drank coffee all day and always slept like a log while I could drink more than two cups and be awake all night. I did not understand it and still dont, but he was a coffeeholic for sure and never had any trouble sleeping at all. guess it is something in our genes perhaps.so coffee really affects different people altogether differently. lol.

That has happened to me too. I am a soda drinker. I drink a heavily caffienated soda from the moment I wake up, till the moment I go to bed, and if I wake up in the night I'll have a few sips. I rarely have a sleeping problem. But when I decide to cut back, I have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. I'm not sure why our body does that. Perhaps it's just the shock of not having the caffeine that our bodies are so used to.

i guess your in the process of withdrawal since coffee had caffeine in it that can makes you addicted..and since you are not drinking as what you had before then it will affect also internally including sleeping habits..it will just pass and you have to make an adjustments to it..

it is just the way your body is withdrawing from drinking so much coffee. i would recommend that you go for a walk before you are ready for bed. do something to unwind, and relax yourself. reading might help, walking, a nice shower. it will go away soon

Yes, this is not unusual as your body is withdrawing and every one has different symptoms but I have heard of people having this same problem as you, when cutting back. I have tried to quit drinking coffee once and I got such wicked headaches that I had to start drinking it again. One time my headache was so bad I couldn't take it anymore so I had a cup of coffee and you won't believe it, about 10 minutes later my headache was gone. Our bodies don't like when we don't put something in it that it is used to. I still drink coffee but I don't drink more than 4 cups a day now. I make my coffee be a special treat for me. I bought vanilla coffee beans and I grind them myself and make just a 4 cup pot of coffee and when I drink it I put lots of cream in it. What I actually do is put the cream in a cup with a little bit of sugar and nook it for 20 seconds and then mix it with my latte mixer so it comes out all fluffy on top and then I pour in my coffee and just fold it into the foam, not stir it. It is so yummy that I drink it only as a treat. I usually only drink my coffee at night and none in the morning anymore. Instead of a coffee in the morning I drink a protein shake.

Maybe you are having withdrawals from the coffee, GB! Your body is used to having a pot, and now it's not getting enough. Our bodies are very strange things, so there's no accounting for what they might do! I always thought coffee was supposed to keep you awake, but it might have the opposite effect for some people.
